Can someone please explain how my American Express card works? How is there not a limit?!

Depends whether you have a credit card or charge card.

Credit cards work as normal, you can carry a balance.

Charge cards are different in that you have to pay off the full balance every month, you cannot carry one over. You do not have a limit per se, but rather a shadow limit that they would not let you spend over. Its not an advertised limit though, and you would probably have to ask them what it is.

With a charge card you build up al limit overtime. You can check online to see if they would approve a transaction. You have to pay it off each month- there is no option to build up a balance.

With an amex credit card you have a limit. Mine is £30,000 but I think that is higher than most.

Don't get one without using a referral link. You will get additional point set. Avios or point sis the main reason for having one.

Headforpoints has a lot of advice.

We have the platinum Amex charge card, as pp said they say no limit but I imagine there is a cap based on your spending pattern. We've had ours about 20 years and I think the biggest transaction has been for about £10,000 for a holiday, it had to clear security to go through. We use our card all the time to collect the airmiles , it's good that you have to pay it off every month so not getting into debt
