For my mum. She has dementia and seems to be getting worse::( do we need to see a solicitor and any idea of costs?

Has she still got mental capacity on her good days? Have a look at the gov.uk website for general info about powers of attorney, and Age UK have helpful info too. If she still has capacity she can arrange it herself/with your help. There is a fee for registering the PoA (really need to do two, one is health the other is wealth). A solicitor would charge in the region of £600 for each, on top of the registration fee. Make sure her Will is up to date too.

You can do it all on line apart from when you need to print off the papers to sign. You do need a certificator though which needs to be someone that is happy to state that there has been no cooercion and that your mother is in her right mind and has made decisions herself as to who should act on her behalf and in what capacity. This can't be a family member or anyone who would benefit in any way from her estate. A critical froend, if you like. This nearly stumped us as by my mother's age, her friends are too elderly or dead. She didn't want a neighbour knowing her business, etc, etc. Anyway, we had the son of her dear friends and he knows her well.

All in all, it was quite quick apart from all of us signing the document. It has to be signed in a certain order and we are scattered round the country. The certificator has to witness your mother signing and everyone has to have witnesses to their signators. However, we did it for just the fee so no expensive solicitors. The online form was easy.

Can't add anymore. Would order the forms from The court of protection and work your way through them. They aren't very complicated.
Same person can be certified provider and witness all signatures and make sure dated for same day throughout the form. Then you just have to pay the fee to the court of protection £82 ??? For each one. One health/welfare and the other for finance.
