Rather bleak question...

I've been reviewing my (and DH's) life assurance and critical illness cover. I currently have a very small critical illness policy, and reckon it would be a good idea to increase it. One of the worst scenarios I thought of would be if I became severely disabled in some way, needing long term care. I'm wondering if there's any state provision for this, or if you/your spouse is earning over £x you have to pay for it yourself (which would then result in a rapid depletion of all assets/savings). I live in Scotland by the way.
