Matched Betting - Negative & Positive Personal Stories Please

FamilyReferee · 08/01/2019 21:54

I've been seeing matched betting talked about a lot. I've been reading up on it (Team Profit, etc), and am on the verge of giving it a go.

Before I do, I just want to ask peoples true stories of it please. So did it work for you? If not, why not, do you think? If so, do you mind giving a ball park figure & over how long?

If I could actually earn a little from this, it could be life changing for me. But is it really as good as it sounds (as long as you're prepared to put in the time & effort), or is it just a money pit like an MLM where you don't see a good return?

I started late August with £100 and am currently sitting on £2,500 so it's worked for me so far. I probably could have made more if I put more effort in but I work FT so am not around to take advantage of a lot of the mud-week horse racing offers.

SisterOfDonFrancisco · 08/01/2019 23:29

Do you need a lot of money to start it? I did some matched betting couple of years ago, only for a month or so,just did a few low amount offers. It was quite straightforward but I didn't want to do anything bigger than £20 so only had £80 profit at the end.

Alarae · 11/01/2019 22:36

I've done it for maybe four hours cumulatively over the past two weeks and made £200. Would have been more but I was a bit of a muppet with a couple of the offers.

fruitbrewhaha · 11/01/2019 22:40

I did a year or so ago. Made a bout £4000 using all the free bets and then stopped. I would like to get back into it.

Have you subscribed to a website like profit accumulator?

Otterses · 12/01/2019 18:45

It's working so far for me! I'm going slowly though.

I'd second signing up with profit accumulator. Sign up for the initial offer with coral and Betfair using Quidco and get the £30 cashback. You need to deposit £10 on coral for £20 cash back, and £10 on coral for £10 cashback - so even if you find it's not for you, you've still made your money back and a bit more.

MintyCedric · 13/01/2019 00:26

Really interesting to read the amounts and timescales.

I had a go at the beginning of December - placed about 8 bets over a week from a float of £80 and made about £25 profit.

Having seen stories of megabucks I wondered if I was doing something wrong but it appears my expectations were a bit high!

I have to take my money out as was a bit short over Christmas/January but will definitely have another go later in the year. I work full time but term time only so will restart during the holidays at some point so I can give it a bit more time and attention.

MrsChollySawcutt · 13/01/2019 13:04

I did this about 2 years ago and easily made a profit of about £2750 from the free bookies offers. I stopped when these ran out as it was starting to be much harder to make money - need to place more bets and and gamble through the profit multiple times before I could cash out.

I was also 'gubbed' (account blocked) by a couple of bookies who had worked out that I was a matched better and not a real punter. The only way to avoid this is to place bets that actually lose, so again more time consuming.

It was fun though and I don't regret it. Keep thinking about starting again but not sure where to start second time around.

MissFitton · 13/01/2019 13:27

Ive been doing this for nearly 2 years - very part time. I'm 11k up currently but that's starting to dry up now as I've lost most of the big bookies. There is money to be made from it but I wouldn't say it's a long term thing. Make sure you read and read and read about how to do it do you can get maximum value before they gub you!

Good luck!

HilaryBriss · 13/01/2019 15:08

fruitbrewhaha I pay £17.99 a month to Odds Monkey which is worth every penny. I also use Team Profit's website and facebook page which are free.

MintyCedric · 13/01/2019 17:36

MissFitton do you just do straightforward bets or do you use accas and the more complicated methods?

MissFitton · 13/01/2019 19:53

Mainly bets but also a lot of casino.

hollytom · 13/01/2019 20:40

I have been doing it for 3 years. It’s not as lucrative as it was but a relatively easy way of making a bit extra each month. I have always used profit accumulator as the main issue with MB is making mistakes which can be expensive.
As to money made over the last 3 years not sure exactly probably just under 10k. I only do a couple of hours a week now and I have made about 3.5k since August 2017. It is good but I would say use a guide rather than do it alone.

FayKnights · 13/01/2019 20:45

I did it about a year ago and stuck to standard bets making a few hundred. I was very skeptical and read into it lots before I started. But once you get into it, it was straight forward. I stopped when the free bets dried up, but have been thinking about looking into it again. I used a subscription site too which really helped.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/01/2019 20:50

It’s not been so positive for me.

Started off ok and probably made around £400. But since then I’ve been recycling the same money in and out.

You have to follow instructions to the letter, don’t go off piste. And I couldn’t get my head round the games which I think you need to do to make bigger money.

I’ve parked it for now, may come back to it in a few years if it’s still possible to do it then.

Racontuer · 13/01/2019 20:52

I have done it for 2 months and made about £350. Mostly football bets, some horse bets. Haven't signed up to every single bookie but most of the biggies. I only spent maybe 10 mins every night / second night doing it. It does require a lot of liquidity which limits the returns.

namechangedforanon · 14/01/2019 13:38

I've done it for a few weeks and made just under £400 I think , need to check spreadsheet. Been super busy since xmas though so haven't done much at all.

I need to get back into it.

It's only bad/risky if you are sloppy and don't check things diligently

SushiMonster · 14/01/2019 13:46

If you need a regular income top up and you are a semi-skilled worker, I believe that getting an actual 2nd job is better on a profit per hour basis.

There is a lot of fucking about sometimes for just a few pence.

However, those few pences add up. And it is 100% flexible (do it, don't do it, do an hour here and an hour there).

Although I make way way WAY more per hour at 'actual work' I can't increase income from work given I'm on a salary. I am also not going go out and get a second job.

I was finding MB a fun way to make some extra tax-free cash (Just over £3k since October) however I am starting to get a bit bored of it and its feeling quite admin-like.

I was working away a lot so had a of of spare time sat on my own in hotel rooms which was perfect MB time. Now I am back in my home office and busier with work, friends, sport activities and life and CBA logging back on at 10pm to do much MB.

The TP face book page is half amazing and half full of total thickos who cant be fucked to google anything or even read the TP webpage.

kickerss · 14/01/2019 14:01

I have a question about being banned (gubbed?). Let's say you won a few bets on Betfair and have £300 on your account but you get banned, do Betfair close your account and keep the £300 or do they honour the bets and give you your £300 before blocking you?

namechangedforanon · 14/01/2019 14:41

Yes they honor bets usually

Being Gubbed just means your account gets blocked from offers not actually closed

HilaryBriss · 14/01/2019 14:45

*kickerss+ you will be able to withdraw your balance from any gubbed accounts, the bookies can't keep it. They don't usually close your account either as you can still use them to make bets, you just will be excluded from special offers or price boosts and free bets. You may also be 'stake restricted' which means you won't be able to place any bets over a certain amount.

SushiMonster · 14/01/2019 16:13

Actually it isn't quite £3k as I was including some cash back for something else in that total.

My pure MB total since October is:

Sign ups 805
Bet clubs 164
Reoads (sport) 1,216
Low risk casino 376
Cash Back (paid) 312.61
OM Membership -44.95
TOTAL 2,829

Cash Back (expected but pending not paid so not inc above) 61

grumpymacgrumpface · 24/01/2019 12:56

I started doing it at the beginning of January and have made about £200 profit so far. You can make money faster if you're prepared (and able) to put a lot of your own funds into it and leave money there for a while.

Ideally you need to be quite organised - keep a record of all your bets and when they're due to be settled (so you don't have money sitting somewhere that you've forgotten about!) and keep track of all your profits. You don't necessarily have to open a separate bank account but it's helpful - that way you know that the balance in their plus the money you have tied up in bets or held at the bookies is your MB money and you just have to subtract your starting balance to work out your profit.

The subscription to Profit Accumulator or Odds Monkey is well worth it - they do so much of the work for you. The first couple of times you do it you'll probably feel sick and it might take a while for you to stop feeling like a grubby gambler.

Be careful and check everything twice. I've made a few errors (I think everyone does) - none of them lost me more than a few pence and a couple were lucky and made me an unexpected profit!

DonkeyScramble · 24/01/2019 17:51

I've made £200 in a little over 2 weeks but agree that liquidity is key to be able to move through the offers quickly. I've put in around £500 to date. It is actually a bit boring but it's easy money.
