Tax credits if my older father moved in

Hi all. I'm a single mother currently claiming child tax, working tax, child benefit and housing benefit. I privately rent. My father's marriage has broken down and he has no where to go at the moment. If he were to move in my house for a 6 month period of time would I be forced to claim UC or could housing benefit just take a deduction for him being here (He is currently out of work) thanks for reading

Don't know the answer, but does this help?
<a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/rent-a-room-scheme-how-it-works-and-tax-rules&ved=2ahUKEwiPyJzg_NvfAhXPJ1AKHRW0CVYQFjABegQIDxAE&usg=AOvVaw2rJS5IMNL3_DNHSekJaaAT" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/rent-a-room-scheme-how-it-works-and-tax-rules&ved=2ahUKEwiPyJzg_NvfAhXPJ1AKHRW0CVYQFjABegQIDxAE&usg=AOvVaw2rJS5IMNL3_DNHSekJaaAT

And try citizens advice?

Him moving in would not affect your tax credits. As you say there would be a non dependent deduction on your housing benefit ( maybe not if he is on a disability benefit) and you would lose your single person deduction on council tax.

Hi thanks for the replies. As there is a change of circumstances on the housing benefit would that mean I would have to naturally migrate over to UC? He's not receiving anything at the moment but will be claiming UC/Jobseekers. He's had a pretty rough time of it recently and I wouldn't like to offer him somewhere to stay but wanted to know my position regarding Benefits. It's hard enough working and being a single parent without the stresses of the dreaded UC.

*would like to offer him

I don't think so as you are not making a new claim for HB, just getting a deduction on your current HB award. I'm not 100% sure though.

It would make sense and that's what I was hoping. I will ask my local housing benefit for their advise in the coming days. Thank you for the advice

I would suggest a welfare rights or citizens advice for the advice part. I volunteer for cab and we have had some people wrongly informed by DWP that they had to claim universal credit. (though not from our local council).

Imjustsaying · 07/01/2019 17:52

Bahadverts- would you say given the situation I shouldn't have to move over to UC? I will definately contact CAB if needs be. I'm absolutely petrified of going onto UC as it would leave me much worse off. Thank you for your reply

From what you have said it doesn’t look like a change that would trigger, however an Internet forum without all the paperwork/background I would never say for definite, hence the signpost

Whether you’re terrified or not.. you definitely need to tell them

Changes you need to report
Changes can include:

changing your name
finding or finishing a job, or working different hours
your income going up or down
starting or stopping education, training or an apprenticeship
moving house
people moving into or out of the place you live (for example your partner, a child or lodger)
your partner or someone you live with dying
having a baby
starting or stopping caring for someone
getting married or divorced
starting or ending a civil partnership
planning to go abroad for any length of time
going into hospital, a care home or sheltered accommodation
any changes to your medical condition or disability
changing your doctor
changes to your pension, savings, investments or property
changes to other money you get (for example student loans or grants, sick pay or money you get from a charity)
changes to the benefits you or anyone else in your house gets
you or your partner getting back-pay (sometimes called ‘arrears’) for salary or earnings you’re owed
