Experience with Morses Club?

Gemisagem12 · 03/01/2019 03:44

Okay so, my mum has had these loans with Morses Club for years, and in July I had to move back in with her temporarily and since then I’ve found that I’m paying absolutely everytning I buy food gas electric, I’m basically supporting her. Anyway.

I found out yesterday that she’s been paying £120 a mont on a Morses loan, baring in mind her wages are only £235 a month (she works part time, is on universal credit and can’t afford ANYTHING)
I’ve taken a quick look at their site and it says that every loan has to undergo an affordability check even with existing customers but there’s no way one was done!
I plan to call them tomorrow but I have no idea how to word it- is it illegal to irresponsibly lend??

I’m at
My wits end supporting her i feed her make sure the house is warm and in all honesty it’s absolutelt draining my money!

A representative loan rate is over 433% 😱

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 03/01/2019 04:26

How much is the total amount owed?

This MSE thread is from 2012 and the rate of interest doesn't seem to have changed.

They also have suspiciously high ratings on TrustPilot, indeed and other review sites both for customers and employees.

Does rather suggest they are very good a curbing bad press.

TBH, I'd never heard of them.

You and your mum may need help from a specialist debt charity or CAB.

She said she takes out £200, and then as she’s about to pay it off, they call her and ask if she wants to take £400, to pay it off; and I honestl have no idea how much she owes in total but this has been going on for a long long time, before I even moved out which was in 2013

You really, really need to go to CAB.

That doesn't sound legal.

You have to know the total debt she (and you) are dealing with.

She needs to ask for a statement of account.

Of course, she needs to stop borrowing too.

Bumping for the late morning crowd.

Gemisagem12 · 03/01/2019 10:12

Thank you ! I’m gonna keep an eye on this post to see if anyone has any advice!

They're a doorstep lender, like Provident. People use them when they can't get loans from anywhere else. As a result their interest charges are extortionate.

You need CAB once these doorstep lenders get their hooks in they like to keep at you and bully people.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 03/01/2019 18:39

Another bump.

She should try to reclaim the money using the MSE resolver tool because it has been misold because she cannot afford to borrow and repay the money.

What day does her payment person come to collect? They will have a book where they mark down her payments and you can see what has been borrowed when.

In my experience, affordability checks for these companies were often dodgy. They have a tendency to put down "lenient" figures which make someone able to borrow more, and then once you've successfully paid back a loan, they'd offer you another one.

I agree with using the MSE tool to raise a complaint. Can your mum remember what she declared as her income? Would she be honest with you, or is she embarrassed?

It's generally not too hard to get Morse and Provident loans written off if they are low value, but getting back any previously paid money is harder.

Agree with PP. Get a complaint in on affordability checks. Someone up thread has put debt camels link. Follow DC advice and submit a complaint.

I did it with Provident for my mother who was trapped in a cycle. She was SZ and had a raft of loans with Provident.

We won. Mum got £6.5k including interest. Balance of existing loans was settled as a full and final.
