prepayment meters for electricity

Can anyone tell me how much it costs to have a prepayment meter installed for electricity and whether it makes any difference if you receive income support or not?
If anyone has one, is it worth it? What are the pros and cons?

We had a prepayment gas meter taken out when we moved here, the gas man said rates are higher on prepayment meters than normal so you pay more per unit, i suppose to cover running costs of cards etc. i would check that out.

i hated the prepayment meter a british gas messed us around big time when it went wrong (bat died), leaving us with no gas (no cooker, heating or hot water) for ten days, so i would say think carefully, so little can go wrong with an ordinary meter.

We got a meter changed to a normal one for free (we changed suppliers first) and they put in prepayment meters free to recover debt

I've had an electric pre-payment meter installed in the last 3 properties I've lived in and I've never had to pay a fee to get them installed.

I've never had a problem with them, I just put money in it every month and that's it done, no need to worry at the end of each month if there is enough money to pay a bill I just put it all in at the beginning.

Have a look at the rates for each supplier.
not sure about charge.

I think it may depend on your credit rating. BG wanted to charge me £300 to swop from prepay to normal due to my low credit rating - this was roughly 4 years ago though!

However, I refused to pay such extortinate fee, so I went over to EDF and it was installed for free. Also, the lady on the phone said its cheaper to have the normal meter than prepay.

My last electic bill was £33 a quarter for a 3 bed terrace house with 1 adult and 1 child.

Shop around!

BTW, I'm dual and my combined monthly charge is roughly £50.
