£30k in 2019

I’ve set myself the bold goal of overpaying my mortgage by 30k next year and looking for ideas for generating a bit of cash to do that.

So far I am:

  • eBaying everything and anything
  • starting an Amazon Merch business
  • cutting any die t debits
  • switching bank accts for the sign on bonus
  • banking any “savings” I make day to day (eg buying a cheaper brand or on deal and bank the difference v full price)

Any other ideas? Ideally I am looking for passive income streams so something like matched betting is too involved.

That's amazing OP, I hope you reach the stars if not the moon is still sn equally great place to land. I suppose 30k is alot for some to save in a year especially if not a mega high earner but nothing is impossible, so I'll be watching with interest. More motivation though as I'm aiming to save 10k towards a deposit. 🙏

If people are interested, I will commit to updating this threads with progress every 2-3 weeks or so... let me know. I feel like that will force me to stay on track!

My suggestions would be :

Set-up the save the change function on all current accounts.
Download the phone app for secon-hand book sale scannin and swipe all your books and also books in charity shops throughout the year, takes about 30mins per week to go through our 8 local charity shops and I average £72pw doing this.
Rent clothing - sounds odd I know but you can rent dresses/outfits for ladies for special occasions if you have any coming up during the year, google your nearest and phone ahead of time and they will keep an eye out for you.
Late-night cleaning, I do 2 hours per week in my village for a large family, I charge £10per hour. Make sure you are paid direct rather than joining a company who will pay you less - fits in with DH looking after kids in the evening and is great excersise. I am embarrassed that I do this so only my husband knows - to everyone else "mummy has gone to the gym".
Rent out your driveway and or garage if you have one - there are websites that will match you to people who need parking.
Also rent out storage space if you have some (think loft or spare room) again websites will match you to people.
Make a jam or chutney and sell through boutique cafe / on trend local produce shop - I do gooseberry jam and a cauliflower chutney - offer sale or return.
Create a document or two for learning and upload to TES website - browse to get some ideas - would take maybe an hour to get two or three up and will give a little stream of money each time it's downloaded - more you do or more niche the better - don't worry about not being a teacher you are sure to have some knowlege that could translate into a worksheet.

Stop all eating out in restaurants and take aways. Bring packed lunch for days out/cinema etc. Bring home made lunch to work rather than paying for exorbitant m and s sandwiches. Get a reusable coffee cup and bring your own coffee with you on the go. No more costa. Not sure this will save you 30k but it will save you some. Good luck I'm on a similar goal and all being well will be done with my mortgage in next couple of years. Cannot wait....

newyearnamechange · 01/01/2019 19:06

Wow op well done

Nestlyn · 02/01/2019 13:47

I'm in too OP I'm looking to save £20k over two years, as my car is leased and I want to buy something outright and keep my car allowance from work as income. I'm basically aiming to save and maybe do some overtime, I've decided not to buy any clothes for me or the children for a year. I'll be following you and keeping myself motivated by your progress.

NChangeForNoReason · 02/01/2019 14:35

Love this thread - following with interest!!

lillylollylandy · 02/01/2019 14:45

Good luck OP!

SimplyStruggling · 03/01/2019 17:10

Hope you don't mind me joining your thread OP! I would like to make a similar amount of money this year if I can- mine is to clear debts. I'm going to do the matched betting and eBay selling. I am also going to look into doing some tutoring in addition to my day job. Hoping to be debt free by 2020!

Jazzybeats · 03/01/2019 18:32

The more the merrier!

Some updates:

  • have claimed for mis-selling on Experian
  • sold some more stuff on eBay for about £150
  • saved on parking by street parking rather than car park
  • signed up for a 10% casback on tube fares via Amex for January
  • got my new current account stuff
  • and we have our 3rd veggie dinner this evening

All small steps but that lot should net me about £300...

Next week:

  • aiming to batch cook 10 meals
  • new round of eBaying
  • getting at least 1x TES template up.

Small steps...

I could do some TES as well. I have a reclaim going on linked to something I was missold a few years ago- I might also look into another one- thanks for the inspiration!

I'm in the process of switching energy suppliers- apparently this will save me nearly £500! Shock

Jazzybeats · 04/01/2019 07:01

Oooh woke up to great news, Amazon Merch account is approved! Will design some T shirts this weekend and get that going 😎😎😎

Nestlyn · 04/01/2019 09:52

Fantastic news Jaz! I've just transferred £1,500 into an empty savings account. Only £18,500 to go, which sounds ridiculous and impossible but I'm so determined.

nottakingthisanymore · 04/01/2019 09:59

I’m interested in putting resources on TES. Probably a stupid question but how do you sort out tax on any income. I work and my tax is taken out directly. This would be extra income though wouldn’t it. Would I need to declare it in some way. I’m embarrassed that I am so ignorant about this.

Jazzybeats · 04/01/2019 11:11

If it’s significant I think you need to fill out a self assessment form. I’m not sure if there is a threshold you can earn without declaring (like on savings interest).

Hopefully someone can come along and advise...

Is matched betting hard? It seems too good to be true... im not unintelligent but do feel a bit ahem "fried" sometimes working full time with a 2yo. Id like to give it a go but dont want to risk losing anything?

Ollivander84 · 04/01/2019 19:31

@flamingofridays not hard as such. It took me a bit of reading and watching the videos to "get" it but now I Place the bets while watching TV

barleyreed · 04/01/2019 20:41

Great thread - thanks OP! We have been overpaying our mortgage for years and are now in our late 30s and own approx 80% which is amazing but now we are looking to extend this year so the mortgage will be huge again! Still glad we did it though. I am also trying to be frugal, but really have few money making schemes other than eBay, which we do a lot of - antiques more than anything, which is our thing! Definitely recommend calling insurers etc to haggle on prices, I got Admiral down £174 on our renewal this week! Also referral codes, we switched to Bulb Energy and every friend recommended got 50 credit if they used your code and I get £50 too, my brother used it and three lovely Mumsnetters after I posted in on a thread so £200 credit on our electricity, which should last us about 6 months! Definitely following for ideas though :)

barleyreed · 04/01/2019 22:09

Ooh, just thought - we also just switched to a water meter, which should save us a fair bit but we have two years to decide if we want to revert to our old tariff instead, so risk free.

Also highly recommend doing a car boot sale, you can make quite a few £100 if you have lots of stuff and it's great for a clear out :)

Sugarhouse · 04/01/2019 23:38

You are inspiring me to try and save more I would never be able to save 30k but any savings to reduce my mortgage and get us nearer to being able to afford something bigger would be good. Please keep us updated with how you get on

MaderiaCycle · 05/01/2019 00:06

What’s the book scanning app @TAmumof3

TAMumof3 · 05/01/2019 09:25

We buy Books

Coppermine · 05/01/2019 10:00

TAMumof3 how do you use it in the charity shop? Scan them then buy the book if it's less than what we buy books are offering, so make a profit?

swirlette · 05/01/2019 10:06

Use cashback sites for everything you can - all my cashback earnings go straight on to my mortgage overpayments!

Annandale · 05/01/2019 10:10

Amazon at least make cancelling and restarting prime really easy. Why not agree to cancel now with an agreement that you'll see if you miss it in 2 months' time?

We're coming up to the council tax 2 month holiday. Set a reminder to pay what you'd normally pay in council tax into your savings instead.
