Yes the courts are likely to let you make a payment plan. Could you not work out a payment plan direct with the local council?

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2018 14:58

Talk to the council
Do not hide your head in the sand
the more you talk to them the more they can work with you

what are your other debts that it ended up in court on that one?

Come and join in one of the big debt threads and lets see if we can make 2019 better than 2018 for you Xmas Grin

Ring them and ask to do a plan. If you ask nicely, they may waiver any fees thus far for the summons

Ignore it and you'll rack up fees and court dates

Just ring Monday

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2018 16:55

@sheard
I would actually suggest going in to see them - take your bank statements to show your finances
and your pay slips to support that
and be willing to discuss ANYTHING they suggest (but haggle politely)

If you are lucky they will work fast to close down the court action at minimal cost to you or them

sheard · 29/12/2018 19:31

time to buy a push bike = perfect for anything under four miles

go in to see them on Monday

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 29/12/2018 20:10

You have to pay things in priority. Tent and council tax HAVE to come first. Above car, washing machines, dogs.... sort that out and life will get easier. If you don’t you could end up in prison.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 29/12/2018 20:11

Rent! Not tent obviously.

WhatASmashingBlouse · 29/12/2018 20:25

The council are usually very co operative with making payment plans for arrears but why did you go and get a dog when you haven't even payed your council tax! These bills are a legal priority!!

sheard · 30/12/2018 09:16

Never been in arrears with council tax myself but a relative did. He ended up being made bankrupt, loads of fees and charges added, and they lost the house Sad.

Absentwomen · 30/12/2018 14:31

OP,

Attend court. Take an income and expenditure with you, make sure all your priorities are in order. Rent, then council tax. Remember current charges too. Offer what you can realistically afford. Then stick to it.

WhatASmashingBlouse · 30/12/2018 14:47

When you get a court summons you can arrange a payment plan then. Or ring the council tomorrow and set one up! It's really simple and they are usually very happy to help. I've been in council tax arrears and they add it onto your current bill and you pay it both at the same time.

sheard · 30/12/2018 17:32

Thanks that is what I needed to know what a smashing blouse appreciate that did u include wage slips etc or just fill form in xx

OP posts:
WhatASmashingBlouse · 30/12/2018 19:02

We spoke with the council directly. They didn't ask for any wage slips or anything like that.

Nikii83 · 31/12/2018 00:00

As someone who works in a local council ctax department. Please phone them and discuss the problems you are having paying if it goes to court you will have extra charges added on. They should be able to discuss a payment plan

Absentwomen · 31/12/2018 07:48

Sounds like from her op that this is going to court. The liability charge is added on at summons stage. Even if she calls them prior to court, that extra charge will have been assigned to her account.

OP, have you had a summons for a court date? It'll tell you you don't need to attend..if you attend, with proof ypu're experiencing financial hardship, the magistrate may remove the extra liability charge.
