What's a decent salary these days for a single person living outside London, age 32?

I'm on 52k. I ask because I don't feel "well off," yet my friends had a chat yesterday saying they think 65k is an absolute fortune...

I know it is all relative and depends on outgoings, liabilities etc. But i suppose im asking in a general way - what does a decent salary look like to people these days.

You are single
You are outside London
You are on £52k
You find it hard to save
What the ferk are you spending your money on ?

You earn more than 75% of the population
You earn twice as much as half the households in the UK
And you CBA to set money aside

Take your head out of your arse
Start to decide what really matters in life
realise how lucky you are
or you'll still be single when you are 52 Xmas Grin

lboogy · 28/12/2018 18:54

I earn way more than you and even I know £52k is well above average and is a lot of money outside London

Deminism · 28/12/2018 20:12

In London. Mortgage is £1600 a month for a decent sized house in a crappy area. Three kids. Combined income of about £115k. We have a nice life - a foreign holiday per year, plenty of groceries, occasional babysitters, a ten year old car, clothes mostly from supermarkets..Never anything left at end of month. This is not a complaint at all. We feel well off. But not living a life of luxury.

snoutandab0ut · 28/12/2018 20:18

I am single in London and earn less than you. I can still save £1000 per month. Wtf are you spending it on? If you have huge outgoings eating up your money then surely that’s within your power to change that. It is a very decent salary for your age outside London

SunnyJune · 28/12/2018 20:36

Oh get lost😂

LoubyLou1234 · 28/12/2018 20:49

If you can't save on that Salary you need to look at your budget! I save 10-20 percent of my wage monthly and overpay my mortgage on 23K
I have no children but we eat out, socialise well, have holidays, live comfortably. It's not well off even in the northwest but I'm happy and comfortable. You earn our joined salaries....

tomhazard · 29/12/2018 05:53

52k on your own with no dependents? You
Must know this is a great salary.
My DH and I earn just over 80k between us with 2 young DC and feel pretty well off so in your shoes I would certainly feel super comfortable

DonnaDarko · 29/12/2018 06:07

Seriously, this is either a stealth brag post or you really are that ignorant or how people live.

DP and I earn around that combined, and we have a child in full time nursery. We live in the south east which is still expensive. We're doing well now as we're rent free, but when we were renting, every month was a struggle.

If you can't save on that salary, with no dependents, you really need to look at budgeting.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 29/12/2018 06:47

You've clearly got a good job with a great salary for your age but you're not terribly bright are you? I know which I'd rather have out of brains and money.

swingofthings · 29/12/2018 08:31

Without children in the NE, you're minted. In the SE with children, no maintenance, paying into a pension, renting a 3 bed house, you are probably just about making it.

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/12/2018 10:46

Well this tells you all you need to know.

On £52k with no dependents, you are better off than 97% of the population (based on an estimated council tax of £1200 per year).

You are either delusional, a bit dim, or a complete spendthrift.

Notquiteagandt · 29/12/2018 11:54

Does anyone else majorly cringe at posts like this?

Gettingbackonmyfeet · 29/12/2018 12:00

I'm sorry I'm usually understanding at a level if naivete but this is ridiculous ...if you are genuinely that low in self esteem you need to get attention on an internet forum using badly acted faux wide eyed naivete then you genuinely need to look at yourself closely

I'm on more than you (just) with two DC in the south east and I know i earn more than most people locally

Either grow up or get help

AndromedaPerseus · 29/12/2018 12:33

On £52k take home pay~ £2700pm
Essential Outgoings:
Rent on 1 bed self contained flat (zone2) ~£1500
Bills~ £100
Travel~£60
Food/Groceries~ ~ £150
Insurance~ £60
That leaves £200 per week for going out, clothes, make up, holidays, breaks, presents, emergencies
I reckon I could save £30 per week out of that and still live quite well. In London it’s the housing costs which really wipe out high salaries. In places outside SE where housing costs are half that of London you’d live really well on a much lower salary

percypeppers · 29/12/2018 13:09

Take home on £52k is almost £3.2k.

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2018 14:08

Hey @2018poster
when do we see your article in the Daily Heil ?

Flatwhite32 · 29/12/2018 14:17

@Notquiteagandt YES. I'm a teacher on mat leave, and full time I earn under £35k. Some posters on here are honestly deluded, discussing 'AIBU' about 100k salaries, nannies and au pairs as if they are normal! Someone even said the other day that they 'wouldn't be well off' once they had kids. That poster earned £100k! Some people need a reality check!

ladyratterley · 29/12/2018 14:22

This is bad taste. I’m 38 & earn just under your salary in London & it’s loads, even paying off a (reasonably hefty) mortgage.
I don’t brag about it on here as I’m very thankful & aware that a lot of people aren’t as well off.
If you can’t save money on a salary of 52k outside London then you need to take a long hard look at your outgoings.

BedraggledBlitz · 29/12/2018 15:40

Moronic thing to ask OP. You must have an inkling of average salaries. If you cant save anything from 52k you need to look at your outgoings.
