Do you know if you have a good credit score?
This will influence the kind of credit card you can get ( they all have different interest rates)
Whats best for me may not be applicable for you.
I would suggest you register with Noddle - www.noddle.co.uk who can tell you your own personal credit score for free.

Then they will recommend the credit card that you are most likely to get accepted for.

I wouldn't just apply randomly for a credit card - if you get rejected then this could affect your chances of getting another one.

Wow thats a,massive amount on credit. I doubt youd get that first time why so much, a loan would be better

DD newly qualified HCP on 23k using our address (we have excellent credit rating) and on electoral register for three years just got 5k.

In contrast her friend in same job applied from her rented address in employment city, only just on electoral register, and got £500.

It therefore depends on more than the income.

Amex cards give high limits if you are accepted but can't be used everywhere.

Money saving expert website is the best place to look at what's out there, after you have done the noddle credit check.

Even on a large income and excellent credit record our new card only came with £5k, our existing card is £12k (only got new one as back up because we shared one card and when he travels alone for business we keep having issues with it being stopped because I'm in one country and he's in another!)

My AMEX has only just gone up to £6k and my credit rating is 100%

Loveweekends10 · 26/12/2018 08:09

I would apply for a personal loan for that amount. I see credit cards been convenient low level spending that you pay full anount back on.

Fairylea · 26/12/2018 08:14

If you can get a card with 0% interest why would anyone get a personal loan? Hmm Lots of credit cards come with long initial interest free periods. If you can pay off the debt within that time it’s a free way to borrow money.

We have had credit cards with £7k limits from Virgin and Barclaycard - but neither of them started off at that level. They started at 3k and then gradually increased. We just keep them incase of emergencies now.

We are a very low income family - only dh working, earning min wage, I am a full time carer to ds and disabled myself. I never understand how credit scores are worked out but we’ve never missed any payments or had any bad marks etc. We do use credit a lot but we’re always good at paying it back so maybe that helps...

Loveweekends10 · 26/12/2018 08:18

Because people dont pay off their credit cards when they are on low salaries and the 0% runs out. That’s how credit card companies make lots of dough. A personal loan ensures it gets paid back.

Sexnotgender · 26/12/2018 08:20

I’ve got £7/8k limits on virgin, hsbc and Santander. Earn over £40k.

Fairylea · 26/12/2018 08:25

Yes if you don’t manage your credit properly you’ll end up in debt for longer / paying more - but that’s true of any debt or loan people take out. If you’re really struggling / low income and have a personal loan you’ll struggle to pay that just as much as a credit card.

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/12/2018 18:35

MSE tells you everything you need to know.

I also get £5-9k limits on a £40k salary to tart the offers, eg Tesco, MBNA, Santander. I once had available limits of about £26k, but have cancelled some cards as I have a couple of balances I would like to roll over. But I only do it if I can profit from it so need an interest free fee free deal or a 0% spend card.
