Grossly overcharged- can I get it fixed?

I was back in the UK at the start of Dec and took some family members for dinner. I can't remember the exact amount but it was approx £180.
I paid on my overseas credit card.
Just got my statement in and I've been charged £537!
My grandfather is well known at the restaurant as he dines there often. Would it be worth calling them? Do I have any rights?
Don't hold out much hope with the bank here tbh, especially when I can't even confirm the proper amount.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

It would certainly be worth scanning / sending a photo of the credit card statement to your Grandad and asking him to go in and see if they can establish between them what has happened, yes. You've got nothing to lose.
I would also contact the credit card provider and tell them you have been fraudulently charged and see what they can do about it. Generally credit cards give good protection and might be interested in looking in to it.

of course worth a try

can you email the restaurant and do you have a receipt from the night?

Ta1kinpeace · 24/12/2018 13:07

Do you have the original slip?
But yes, definitley worth contacting the restaurant.
They will have the value of their meal in their takings sheets for VAT purposes.
They might even be able to supply you a copy receipt.

is part of that new total bank charges and changes in exchange rates? You need to compare the actual currency charges.

SadieContrary · 24/12/2018 13:55

I've just checked my statement again and it's a bank error. Happened across 4 purchases, where I've spent in dirhams they've charged me in pounds which is 5x the amount almost. The total is almost £2k! Can't believe I haven't noticed before. Liaising with the bank now AngrySad

BLIMEY !
Glad you got it sorted.
I go through my statement line by line and check receipts every month.

HotInWinter · 24/12/2018 14:06

Ouch!
In some ways, it's good that it's a bank error, and hopefully it's all sorted quickly.

Would you be prepared to share which bank? I know lots of people who spend in the "wrong" currency, and it would be good to know who should look out for it!

Frazzled2207 · 24/12/2018 14:09

Ouch. Fingers crossed bank sorts it out for you.

greenlanes · 24/12/2018 14:10

I only came across this relatively recently where you could "choose" which currency to buy in on the chip n pin machine. Not that sure its a good idea. But pleased at least you have now found the reason. Hopefully the bank can help.

SadieContrary · 24/12/2018 14:26

It's not sorted yet, however, I'll need to exercise a LOT of patience when I call the bank. The statement isn't due settled til 15/1 so I have time. DM reminded me that dinner bill was only just over £100 as me, her and DGF weren't drinking. So it's defo a straight conversion where the amount would be right if it was AED but instead they've levied GBP.
Merry Christmas to meeeeeee!

Does the bank have an online chat system that you can query the transactions now?

MardAsSnails · 24/12/2018 14:39

I think we may have the same bank 😜 - after the original post I was going to suggest a conversion issue.

it’s been a widespread problem apparently and I had the same issue with euro transactions the first weekend of December.

Glad it’s sorted without too much hassle

SadieContrary · 24/12/2018 14:40

They'll be open as I live in a Muslim country but I can't face it at the moment 🙈 terrible I know.
Plus DH will hear conversation and if he sees my credit card statement I may receive a divorce tomorrow instead of the Sephora haul I'm hoping for 😂

Oops, ignore the last sentence - took me a while to type and missed your last post.

Patience? Good luck! It’s certainly needed with these guys! I’ve been ‘assured’ it’s sorted. I don’t believe them yet

Funny how it doesn’t ever happen the other way - spend £100 and get charged £500 instead of 100dhs!

MardAsSnails, are you a member of RMD on FB? Lol. I was about to post there for advice!
