Electric bill is in minus numbers

I'm probably being really thick here but I just can't wrap my head around the logic of it. I pay my bill by monthly instalments at an agreed rate. Got an email the other day from my electricity provider to say I had a new bill. So I looked it up online and there's a figure in minus numbers. I'm hoping this means they owe me money??🤞🤞🤞 (p.s. have tried to phone them but have up after holding on for 20 minutes 😓)

Is the amount you have used a negative figure or just what you owe? If you have been overpaying over the summer you would expect to have some credit (so owe a negative amount) at this point in the winter. You will have used it all by the end of the winter.

Yes, I think you’re correct. This used to happen when we started paying direct debit with eon. They set it at an estimation of how much we would use, and then overcharged for months, meaning we got a statement in minus figures, after a while they reduced our direct debit based on our actual usage.

If the amount you have used is negative they must have had an incorrect meter reading at some point in the past which has now been corrected (so you had overpaid and now you are being credited) or the current meter reading is incorrect...

You are over paying. If you heat your house with electric it will even itself out by the spring don’t worry about it you can ask them to refund the overpayment but you might find you’ll be in debt to them next month.

You've probably built up credit over the summer, see what happens over the winter as the credit may be used up - if it isn't, then you need to reduce the DD.

Yes you are in credit with them, but don't do anything about it just yet January and February are usually high usage months so it will go back to normal. They will reassess the monthly payments automatically at some point.
