Anyone been turned down for life insurance because of Fibromyalgia?

DH & myself both applied for life insurance policies because we are buying a new house. He has hypothyroid, type 2 diabetes & weighs over 20 stone. His application has been approved pending medical records being checked. I was turned down flat, no reason given. I do have Fibromyalgia, but its not a life-threatening condition, so I don't see why I would be turned down on this. Any ideas? Am I likely to be accepted anywhere?

Was your application looked at by an underwriter or just turned down at outset? Different insurers can have different views about the same medical conditions, partly based on their own claims experience.

Did you use an insurance broker or just apply directly to the insurer? A broker will do the legwork for you in trying to place the business.

We went via a broker & I was turned down flat.

Did your broker speak to the underwriters to find out exactly why they weren't happy with the risk presented? Do you know which insurers/how many different ones they approached?

I'm a financial adviser and I would always try to find out why my client was deemed to be uninsurable, as it would then give me a steer as to where to try next. There are insurers who are prepared to look at special situations. It doesn't have to be "computer says no".

I've been turned down flat I'm assuming in the basis of a MH diagnosis. I'm stable and medicated... And any other eg travel insurance policy I've had over the years has excluded suicide - fair enough! I read their general t&c and suicide seems to be an exclusion anyway... So I'm wondering what exactly my increased risk might be? Confused

Tbh I'm not sure where to channel the cash now.

PS I had to disclose my mother is diabetic - however there was no differentiation made between type I and type II. Dicks.

Haven't heard back from the broker yet Sunseed, but I definitely want to know their reasons why. It makes no sense to refuse someone flat out who has a non life threatening condition. Hmm

Makes no sense either Peeved. They must have a thing about anything deemed mental health & probably lump Fibro in that category too. I noticed that about type 1 & type 2 diabetes lumped in as one as if they are the same. Crazy!

Are you pending any investigations at all?

It's a very odd decision...have you definitely got the names the right way round on the application?! I'm very very surprised he has been accepted with his weight and T2 diagnosis

You should have had a decision letter explaining why you were declined - if not, call the insurer and ask.

Violetroselily · 01/12/2018 21:07

I've just checked the underwriting limits for one of the big life insurers and his weight + diabetes is an instant decline

Your broker needs to ensure that the applications were submitted correctly - I've seen it happen before where the names are the wrong way round

I was going to suggest a mix up application. It doesn’t addup

Andrea14 · 23/12/2018 20:59

I have fibromyalgia I'm with LV insurance.

Shopgirl1 · 28/12/2018 00:26

Violetroselily how can you know weight is an instant decline without knowing height - isn’t BMI normally what it depends on? And even then unless BMI very high it’s usually a loading.
As asked OP, are you pending any investigations?

MincePieMum · 29/12/2018 21:25

I'm with LV and have Fibromyalgia and Elhers Danlos Syndrome. No problems with cover.

dubbyoo · 09/01/2019 13:35

OP have you managed to sort this now? I'm also having a life insurance cover delay (gosh I hope it's just a delay for reports and not a decline). How long did it take you to get an answer or have things resolved?

dubbyoo · 09/01/2019 13:37

Also, apparently there are some insurers who are more sensitive and accepting of different health histories things. MSE had some that were good specifically for people with any mental health history, not sure if disproportionately expensive sorry. Fibromyalgia isn't a decline on mental health grounds surely? That would be really unfair
