Returning faulty goods - would you expect initial P&P charge to be refunded?

Just that really. I think it should be. Family members say I'm being grasping (WTF?).

Nope. Only refund for faulty goods

GingerbreadTeapot · 26/11/2018 14:56

Yes of course

Otherwise you've paid to be sent faulty goods that you didn't keep Confused

bimbobaggins · 26/11/2018 16:31

No I wouldn’t expect it

SpottingTheZebras · 26/11/2018 16:34

I would expect a replacement without costing me extra P&P and I wouldn’t expect to pay to return the item. If I just wanted a refund, then yes I would expect P&P to be refunded for something that was faulty.

KirstyJC · 26/11/2018 16:38

Of course! Otherwise you have still paid money for something you don't have because it is faulty. If you bought online there should be a return policy somewhere?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/11/2018 16:44

Thanks for your helpful replies. I will see if I can dig out the returns policy. I think if they'd sent the replacement (as I requested) with no quibble, I wouldn't have minded stumping up for postage but I've been unnecessarily inconvenienced several times over with the item being faulty (which isn't my fault).

I'll let you know what happens (I've now requested the P&P refund). Fingers crossed...

To report that I got my refund!

On the face of it it seems obvious that you should since the goods were faulty, but then would you expect to get you bus fares paid or petrol money if you took something back to a shop? Appreciate that buying from a shop means you have a bit more opportunity to spot a fault but not always.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/11/2018 18:17

Well done! I typed my reply ages ago but forgot to hit send and then saw your update.

Highlandmary · 26/11/2018 18:18

I think if you get a refund then the p and p should be refunded otherwise you are out of pocket. If they send a replacement I wouldn't expect to pay the 2nd lot of postage either

UnderTheSleepingBaby · 26/11/2018 19:37

One of the supershopper type shows recently had a segment about this and apparently regardless of the reason you return an item (even if you just changed your mind) the retailer has to refund their standard postage charge (so if you paid for faster they only have to refund standard delivery cost). They are not obliged to provide free returns but even if they do they can't use this as a reason not to refund the postage cost.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/11/2018 19:58

I suspect very few people are aware of that UnderTheSleepingBaby. That they processed the refund so quickly (when I asked) suggests to me that they're just chancing that people won't ask but are fully aware that consumers have every right to the P&P refund.

How long ago did you buy the item?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/11/2018 06:29

Less than a month! Item showed itself to be faulty within a matter of weeks.

delilahbucket · 28/11/2018 11:44

Then yes, they have a legal obligation to refund your initial postage. Did they pay for the return postage as well?

Pinkprincess1978 · 28/11/2018 19:53

If you were returning for a refund in full and it was the only item on the order then yes p&p should be refunded.

If you were getting a replacement then no.

If you were getting a refund but had other goods on order then no.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/11/2018 20:12

Hi no replacement offered (although I did ask!), yes they did pay return P&P and no other goods ordered.

I was happy with the outcome which logically felt to be the right outcome to me. My family are quite unassertive about things like consumer rights (hence my DM's 'grabby' comment) but I know better.

I hope my query helps others too.

Many thanks everyone.
