Gas and electric

Lulutheboss · 20/11/2018 18:18

I know this has been asked before but I wanted to get a more recent picture of current prices.
Our e-on gas and electric has just gone up from £143/month to £174/month. I nearly fell over when I opened the letter! It was bad enough before!
We live in a small three bed end of terrace house and have approximately £240 credit on our account.
We are all out the house for four full days a week.
What’s everyone else paying at the moment? Any tips for cheaper deals?
Thanks.

Ours has just gone up from 121 to 163 :(

popcorndiva · 20/11/2018 18:21

Seems expensive. Do you have double glazing? How old is the house? Are you on a fixed rate or standard tariff?

onemouseplace · 20/11/2018 18:21

We are in a draughty 3 bed flat and ours is £115/ month with Ovo. Someone is in most of the time as well.

Floralnomad · 20/11/2018 18:27

We are with BG dual fuel is £140 per month , that a 25 yo fairly large 4 bed , the heating is on 24/7 and someone is in most of the time , it works out at more for electric than gas but my tumble dryer , washing machine and dishwasher are on most days .

Real spend of energy for October;
Electric £23
Gas £27

2 bed mid terrace /modernish/35 years old

Use gas for heating /hw and cooking ,boiler is original and 35 years old :)

SongforSal · 20/11/2018 18:37

I'm on pay as you go. We both work FT, heating goes on for an hour in the morning, and about 3 hrs in the evening. Gas is currently costing us about 20 quid every 4 days, and electric is about 20 every week, maybe a bit more.

mynaughtylittlesister · 20/11/2018 18:43

I had problems with my last energy supplier, they kept on putting it up and up and up, to the point that it was going to cost me £144 a month. I tried to explain to them that I had had a broken boiler but it was all sorted now (boiler was stuck on constant for 2 weeks and thermostat conked out!!) They wouldn't listen, just that my last bill was large - yes I agree it was but it was all paid off now. Refused to lower my monthly direct debit - thankfully I was at the end of my fixed term, I switched to Octopus; I have been with them since the beginning of September, I am already £199 in credit! Oh and my previous energy supplier gave me a refund as I had paid too much!

So far Octopus has been really good, I had £50 credited to my energy account as an assentive and if I recommend anyone else then I will get another £50 credited to my account and so will they.

At present I am paying £84 for both gas and electric. 3 bed end of terrace.

StressfullTimes · 20/11/2018 18:46

I am with Eon and pay £74 a month total, 3 bed semi detached property. The house is a new build tho 2ish years old and it is A rated for energy.

Skyejuly · 20/11/2018 18:49

4 bed detached and pay 77pcm with bulb

Phillipa12 · 20/11/2018 18:52

3 bed victorian terrace, only half double glazed, has very thick walls though. 3 dc and i work part time. My dual fuel bill has just dropped to £70 a month. I am careful with usage as im a single mum, we have energy saving bulbs throughout and heating on twice a day with occasional 1hr boost midday if im in.

Lazypuppy · 20/11/2018 18:52

Ours is £50 a month for both, 2 bed terrace house

SumitosIsMyWall · 20/11/2018 18:55

Energy cap is coming in next year so it could be interesting to see how your Energy provider expects this to affect your bills. The cynic in me believes they are putting up Direct Debits just to get a few last high payments before the cap is applied...

Derekmorganwasinmybed · 20/11/2018 18:55

3 bed terrace house £70 a month for both

Almondio · 20/11/2018 18:56

Recently changed to Bulb and started on about £90 a month (three bed large-ish detached), they've just put it up to £120 a month, reason being they say we need to save up for next winter Hmm.

Will be contacting them this week to discuss and reduce the monthly payments. If they won't, we'll move to another supplier.

Wanttomakemincepies · 20/11/2018 19:39

£66 a month for both with Ovo. 1960's 3 bed mews house with D/G and loft insulation.

DerelictWreck · 20/11/2018 19:42

£40 a month for both, 2 bed, 2 floor flat with mainly external walls. I'm out 12 hours a day 5 days a week though

sunshineandthunder · 20/11/2018 19:47

4 bed detached and £95pm dual fuel with Eon

Arnoldthecat · 20/11/2018 20:10

Some of the results here show the much higher insulation qualities of well built new builds...

Lulutheboss · 20/11/2018 20:43

Wow! Thanks for the quick responses folks.

Our house is just a bog standard 1930s built end of terrace. We have double glazing, loft insulation and a fairly new boiler that we use in conjunction with a Worcester Wave.

The tariff was fixed a couple of years ago on the lowest priced plan and the meter was read last week.

I’m going to shop around tomorrow as it’s my day off.

Arnold you’re definitely right about the difference between old and new houses.

Mine's a 300-year-old church conversion! And converted appallingly too Shock

Appreciate flats are a little different though as I will benefit from the flat below me.

Oblomov18 · 21/11/2018 13:14

Christ I'm shocked too.
Ours is £140 for both. That's a small 3 bed x council in Surrey!

That was the best deal Dh could get and he shopped around.

janinlondon · 21/11/2018 13:25

It really isnt useful to compare how much people are paying - the important thing is how much actual energy we are all using. Everyone is paying at different tarrifs - you need to compare your usage.

Lulutheboss · 22/11/2018 19:23

It is useful to get an idea for a similar size property.

Anyway, I have decided to change to Octopus (thanks naughty). They have put us on £124/month for high usage, which can always be adjusted down if necessary.

Thanks all for taking the time to respond.
