Have Barclaycard written off my debt?

I had this letter today and I can't quite believe what I've read and would like a second opinion.

It says "Following a review of our operating procedures we have identified that for customers who have fallen behind on their payments, we did not always meet our expected standards for assessing customers' circumstances or engaging with them".

They go on to offer me £75 as an "inconvenience payment".

but it then goes on to say "We may not have been in contact with you for some time about your account. However we want to let you know that we're now closing your account and do not require any further payments in relation to the outstanding balance".

Do you think I'm right and they have written the debt off? I'm stunned if so!

File the letter away safe

gallicghoul · 15/11/2018 21:12

Sounds like it.
Interestingly my friend had this payment today too.

AdoraBell · 15/11/2018 22:39

Definitely file it away, and photocopy it just in case.

Presumably there is a reference number on it?

BarMcBarsen · 15/11/2018 22:42

Oooh lucky you! Do you have an online account? What does it say? How much was it?

bundleofbabyboy · 15/11/2018 22:51

Thanks for responding. It’s about 4 grand - online account no longer working unfortunately. It all looks legit, I just can’t really understand why they would’ve done it. Will definitely keep the letter safe!

How much did you owe?

Temporaryanonymity · 15/11/2018 22:53

Had they been in touch? How v odd.

Processedpea · 15/11/2018 22:56

Did you fall behind in payments?

bundleofbabyboy · 15/11/2018 22:57

No, they hadn’t been in touch for ages. I had an agreement to pay £5 per month & it’s just been going out with no statements of anything from them. It is really very odd.

Were you paying it off when you got the letter OP? I got into debt with a barclaycard so would love to get a letter like this!

bundleofbabyboy · 15/11/2018 22:57

I fell behind with the payments years ago and had been in a payment plan.

Sorry just seen your last comment that answered my question!

AE1234 · 15/11/2018 22:58

Can you access your online accounts to see a balance?

bundleofbabyboy · 15/11/2018 22:58

Fingers crossed for you Bluetit!

Wow! Lucky you!
Wish Santander would do the same bastards

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 15/11/2018 22:59

I've had this letter today as well. It's such a relief. I've phoned them, not on the number from the letter, it is legit and the debt is no longer being pursued but it will remain on the files of the credit reference agencies

eternalopt · 15/11/2018 22:59

They've discovered something they've done very wrong I suspect and have assessed which liability would cost more - writing off the debt and giving you £75 "inconvenience" payment or facing whatever claim you may have. Keep the letter safe and enjoy!

bundleofbabyboy · 15/11/2018 22:59

No, can’t access the online account. I haven’t tried for ages and presumably the account really is closed now and not available.

@bundleofbabyboy thank you! 🤞🏼

bundleofbabyboy · 15/11/2018 23:02

Sorry, cross posting with everyone. That’s great Sugar - I was scared to ring them in case it wasn’t real 😂. I expect you’re right Eternalopt!

It depends when you took out your Barclaycard originally.

I had dps Barclsycard debt written off because if you had opened your account before a certain date they destroyed all the original agreements.

Guy I initially spoke to laughed at me when I said dp would need the original signed agreement before recognising the debt.
The guy I spoke to said original agreements dated before a certain date had all been shredded and it didn’t matter as dp owed the debt.

I wished him luck in taking dp to court as no court would give anyone the time of day if you don’t have the original agreement.

I sent Barclaycard a letter stating we wanted the original agreement before he recognised the debt.

Non was forthcoming so nothing was done.

At best they would have had to refund any interest paid or owing as well as payments made against any money spent. But if you have had it for some time there wouldn’t have been any money owing

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/11/2018 23:18

It sounds like they haven’t learned from their mistakes as I found this out 10+ years ago.

They probably realised they can’t do anything if you stopped paying and £5 per month was probably too costly to process

bluetit101 · 15/11/2018 23:30

@bundleofbabyboy
Can I be cheeky and ask if the £5 a month agreement was with a debt collection agency? I got myself in a bit of trouble last year and trying to sort out monthly repayment plans but haven't done my Barclaycard one yet

Llioed · 16/11/2018 03:40

I took out my barclaycard more than 10 years ago (end of 2007) and would love to receive a letter like this. I may ask them for a copy of my original agreement - fingers crossed!!

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 16/11/2018 06:20

@Liloed I think it's if you have stopped paying due to financial difficulties although I obviously only asked them about my own account. They're not writing off live accounts so it will depend on your circumstances.
