Equity and universal credit

Hello

I’m wondering if anyone can help.

My husband and I have been separated since January. He moved out and I stayed in the house (joint mortgage) with the children.

We put the house on the market straight away and despite reducing the price it still hasn’t sold.

He now wants to move in here I save money and I plan to rent somewhere privately with the children. I’m more than happy to do this as I want a fresh start and hate the house.

My question is will my half of the equity in the property count as capital savings for universal credit ?

I can’t move unless I know I will still be able to receive universal credit as my wages alone wouldn’t be enough to cover everything.

Sorry it’s a long winded question, just wondered if anyone had any previous experience of this ?
Thanks in advance

I think they will give you the rent element of Uc for a while as long as reasonable measures are being taken to sell the house. I think it is a year but may be longer as long as you can prove it's on the market and you are trying to sell. I presume when your ex moves back he will still be trying to sell the house ? Once it is sold your share of equity may rule you out of claiming UC altogether if over 16k unless you are putting the money back into buying another property in which case it can be disregarded for 6 months from the sale I think.

Thank you for your reply, after 5 phone calls to them I finally got the answer this morning. They echoed what you said, thanks again.
