Due to a change in circumstances I am rebudgetting and soon my finances will change meaning that after all bills and regular weekly costs like food and fuel I will have just under £100 left to pay for absolutely everything else. I’m thinking School trips, uniform, occasional days out, small vets fees, car maintenance etc. I do have some savings for any large expenses like unexpected vets bills for example and have budgeted a small amount a month to add to that. Do you think this will be doable with careful spending or I will be leaving myself too short?

£100 a week is loads!!

£100 a week after bills, fuel and food sounds like plenty. Most people aren't so fortunate.

VioletCharlotte · 10/11/2018 11:41

I don't think it's loads at all. I could manage for maybe a week or so but but not long term. I budget £200 a week for me, two teen DS and a dog. You could probably just about do food and fuel, but I can't see how you'd have money for everything else.

That’s quite a lot after bills, food and fuel!

VioletCharlotte · 10/11/2018 11:41

Oh sorry, just seen this is after food and fuel. That should be fine then.

If it is after all bills and food and fuel it should be plenty. We put aside money for Christmas and birthdays and house and car maintenance every month so we have the money for them when we need it. I would try and save about £50 of your weekly £100 for those expenses and spend the other £50 on days out and clothes etc.

That seems very manageable. I thought ( when I saw the title of the post) that it was to include food.

That’s great, thanks for your helpSmile

Wish I had that 🧐

I think it would be tough, but with planning ok. Work out average uniform costs, and start putting some of that away. Same with presents for Christmas and birthdays. Maybe even start putting 'treat' money away too. Put some in an actual savings account for the incidentals- and there really isn't much if anything left. I'd say yes- doable. But start some pretty damn strict budgeting now.

Any change in financial circumstances is a shock, £100 is a lot to some people. But if you are used to having e.g £200 a week then it's a 50% loss, I tend to think of money in those terms. Plus it's what people are used to.

I was retired through ill health in my late forties. My pension is decent but not as good as my wage was and I took a hit on my income. DH pay has gone up by around 20% but we are still have a shortfall of what was expected if I hadn't become ill.
