cos I'm tearing my hair out.

DH earns a salary and gets a car allowance. From my understanding of the booklet accompanying the form, in one box I have to put the car allowance and in a different box I have to put his salary.

Now I also understand I can deduct his pension contributions from his salary, yes?

So for the salary box, I have to add up all the pension contributions he's made over the tax year and the car allowance he's been paid over the tax year and deduct the total from his total pay on his P6o, is that right?

If so it's gonna be a right pain cos they changed during the year...

Nutty is that your renewal form?

You can do it over the phone with them if it makes it easier for you

nuttygirl, as far as I'm aware you have to add on the car allowance (and any fuel allowance) to the salary. I have just submitted my claim and my car allowance for the year was £5k - therefore they took my salary and added £5k onto it to give them the total. Not sure about pension though, I didnt even mention that!

No, it's my first form. Had baby in April so first claim! (I know I may live to regret bothering!)

It's just there's one box on the form for salary and one for car allowance. Problem is they aren't separated anywhere except his payslips so my only option would be to go through them all and add it up.

The booklet says you can deduct pension contributions (for certain schemes). The booklet also tells me I can find the separated info on a form the employer should provide but his employer doesn't (and the deadline for the employer to provide this form is too late for me to send my claim in and get the payment back dated).

Do you think I could just put the total in the salary box and ignore the car allowance box?

Im not sure tbh and would hate to give you the wrong info! However, if it were me, I would take the car allowance from the last payslip and multiply by 12 (as your tax credit claim will be for the next 12 months as opposed to the previous 12 months) then add it into the actual car allowance bit.

Ok thanks for the help

If the car allowance is money paid to him through his salary you don't have to show it separately, just take the final pay figures from the P60.

If he had a company car, his employer would give him form P11D and this would have the taxable benefit amounts on it. These figures you show in the separate box.

Same with the pension. If it is taken from his salary by his employer then the final figures on the P60 will already have been adjusted to take that off. It's only when you are paying contributions separately to a personal pension plan that you have to show it separately.

I can't advise you on yourn specific form as our circumstances are different.

However I gave up filling the form in a couple of years ago and now call and do it over the phone. The advisor tells you where to look on the P60 for each bit of info they need and from that 1 call it's all sorted and you can go back to more interesting stuff!

Good luck!

If you have a p60 then that his taxable pay so you shouldn't be deducting pension contributions off that amount if they are made via his work place. No clue about car allwance though but would expect it also to be accounted for on the P60. I would def ring them with his P60 to hand.
