can anyone advise me on how to approach my credit card people? I can't meet the payments, and someone mentioned some time ago to me that they can freeze the account and agree to a set, reduced repayment.
Does anyone know the ins and outs of this? and how I should word it when I make the phonecall?

Sorry I can't help specifically but have you tried looking here . There is always loads of advice - good luck.

Is it the only debt you are struggling with? The Citizens Advice Bureau is great at helping with this sort of thing-they will help you prepare a statement of your finances and approach any debtors on your behalf.
Companies tend to be more accepting of a situation if it is presented through CAB or a similar agency.

We're having same prob and are in contact with the cccs and they have been fab. We've sent out letters asking if they can freeze interest and charges and accept a token payment. We're waiting to hear back now to see whether they agree. It may go to a county court judgement but we're in process of dealing with it. Ring the national debt line. X

Sorry should have said "creditors" not debtors!

When I was having a lot of trouble keeping up with my debts, I used a charity called Consumer credit counselling service.
They can send you forms to fill out, official letters, how to work out outgoing etc plus they have a helpline if you need to talk to someone.
Here
BTW If you lok for this website again, make sure there are no dashes in the web address. There is a company witha very similar address who charge for their services. The one on my link is a charity so all free!
I was with Barclaycard and they lowered my interest to 1% and gave me a managable set payment. Most companies want to help you, not chase for money that you can't pay.
