Maternity Allowance & UC

Does UC take into account back payments from MA? I’ve been borrowing money off family thinking that once I get the back pay from MA I could pay people back... but I’ve been told by a family UC will take the back pay into account and take it from my allowance within the assessment period? Is this true? Panicking as my mum took out a loan in her name so I could cover rent, and bills and I was going to pay her back from the back pay I’m going to get next week.

why is it being paid in a lump sum ?

Maternity allowance is deducted form your UC amount pound for pound unlike SMP which you lose at the taper rate for earnings. I'm really not sure about back pay though, my instinct is to say that yes it would cancel out any payment for that month that it was paid in.

I’m receiving a lum sum as they’ve back dated my MA to August, and then I’ll recieve MA fortnightly. I’m currently in my first assessment period and will receive the back payment within this assessment period. I was really hoping to be able to pay friends and family back as I’ve been borrowing money since I went on to maternity leave. I’ll have to just explain to them and hope they understand and pay them back a little bit at a time.

Recieved my statement today. I’m not entitled to UC anymore as I’m receiving to much from MA. Thankfully family have been understandable about the situation.

Have you had your baby yet ? if not then your total Uc will increase when the baby is born and you will then hopefully then get something from UC again.

No haven’t had baby yet, but I already have a 5 year old.
