Background - he has just started new job - clearing approx £400-£500 weekly. Has comfortable own room/access to all amenities/big appetite - packed lunch, evening meal, snacks and toiletries all provided.
What do you think is reasonable?

I'd split the bills with him. Work out food/toiletry cost and he should pay for all that. Maybe a small rent fee but whilst he's with you could he have to save instead of full rent. Obviously up to you.

Approx £65 a week.

Our philosophy was that all adults pay their share of bills, so we calculated the cost of bills and food and worked out a sum based on that. We didn’t include anything for rent as we own our house.

It felt right because we were treating DS as an adult with adult responsibilities. He was able to save all the money he would have spent on rent and has now been able to move on and use his savings for the next stage of life.

Just remembered something else. We also said he had to start up a pension. We sat down with him and helped him to do it at the same time as setting up his regular payments to us.

If you look at the shelter website it shows you how much a grown up child living in your home should contribute (if you claim certain benefits) and it looks like he would be expected to give £98 a week.

20% of take home for bed and utilities. An equal portion of the foodshop (so split weekly food bill equally across the household and he pays one portion of it).

Are you making other packed lunches so doing his too? Or are you only doing his?

Another vote for his share of the bills. So if there are 3 of you in the house then he pays 1/3 of council tax, utilities, tv, internet, and food etc
