Credit cards help PLEASE!

bottleofredplease · 10/10/2018 11:10

Can anyone help here? I was turned down for a balance transfer card last week, first time this has ever happened and I'm not sure why. If I apply for another card will it be turned down because I was turned down already last week? Or does it not work like that?

I just bought a large purchase with the intention of paying it off over 3 yers on a 0% balance transfer.

Thanks for any advice.

Have to missed any payments? I’d get a look at your credit report and see if there are any anomalies.

I think you need to find out why you were turned down by getting a copy of your credit check. I think you can do this for a couple of pounds.

  1. Get on Noddle and check there's nothing dodgy on your credit report.
  1. Try the moneysavingexpert.com pre-eligibility checker - some providers are fussier than others.

I just checked Noddle it says I have a 5/5 credit rating and score of 638.
It does also say that there have been 9 searches in the last 30 days, could this be the problem. I have not applied for anything else so not sure why it shows 9. Anyone know?

Your credit score's higher than mine and I was approved for a mortgage in August! I've heard having lots of searches can be a thing but otherwise I'm at a loss, sorry.

bottleofredplease · 10/10/2018 16:34

Thank you anyway, good to know it's not the score, perhaps the searches.

9 credit searches or 9 identity or information searches? The latter isn't visible to other providers but 9 credit searches make you look like you're either going on a spree or desperate for credit.

Second the MoneySavingExpert.com eligibility checker to see who will give you a card. If you have no luck, see if there are any offers available from cards you already have.

Best to check Experian which is free. 638 is pretty low.

blackcat86 · 10/10/2018 21:36

I've had this before OP and it turned out to be because my credit limit on the card I had was quite high even though my debt wasn't. I had about £2,000 on a card from travelling that I wanted to transfer but my total credit limit on the card was £5,000. I applied for a 0% balance transfer deal and was turned down because my total credit would have exceeded what was recommended for my salary. They wouldn't account for the fact that I intended to close down card 1 when I transferred to card 2.

BigBadBarryatemyboat · 10/10/2018 22:17

To be fair Joe66, I think Noddle score is a max of 710, so 638 isn't too bad.

You can sign up for a free credit report via moneysavingexpert credit club.

Use the MSE checker- it tells you which cards (if any) you have a decent chance of getting, so you only apply if it's actually worth applying.

bottleofredplease · 11/10/2018 16:18

The thing is, I did the eligibility check and it said hat the one I got turned down for was 90% chance. I'm worried about applying again and ending up in a worse position, I could get rid of a card I have with nothing on and a £5000 limit, would that help?
