Applying for a council house, help!

Hello,

My and my partner have broken up. I have been staying in the house and claiming benefits for me and my children. Recently, my ex partner got physical and police were involved. I have been advised by the police to apply to the council so I can move.

The council have asked for 2 months bank statements ? I have nothing to hide, but what is this for? Do they just need to see the money going in to my account as I don't like the thought of them seeing where my money goes!

Also, they have advised as the police were involved I may be offered a place in a refuge, I'm not sure I want to go down that road!

Has anyone been in this position and have any advice for me? Thank you

Why did the police advise you to move?

cmajmx · 03/10/2018 17:01

Due to isolation and affordability. I have no family in the area and I cannot afford the house by myself

They ask to see your accounts if you are asking for help so they can see what you are living on financially. You have to be an open book.

Depending on your area you could be waiting years and offered a room/ refuge. You will be expected to accept the first thing offered.

I am surprised (as your married) the police advised you leave a property you own. It makes you vulnerable financially. Your ex still has to put a roof over your children's heads.

Sorry just seen your not married. I would still be careful about making any snap decisions.

Im sorry this has happened op. Its standard for councils to ask for bank statements when applying for housing. Its very possible that you will be offered temporary accomedation or a refuge in the first instance.

It's so they can be satisfied that you don't have the resources to house yourself, OP.

I think all councils do it, the ones in my area all do.

Sorry I don't see what your problem is when you apply for a mortgage you have to provide details of your financial situation, when you rent privately your LL has the right to ask to see copies of your bank statements as part of tenancy screening, you say you are on benefits, did you not have to give any financial details when you claimed them, I don't know about your housing costs at the moment but if you claim housing benefit you will have to prove you are entitled to it and part of that will be to send them bank statements. In fact reading your second post you cite affordability as one of the reason you need council housing, so why are you querying the councils right to make perfectly legitimate enquiries to prove what you are saying is correct.

Sorry you are in this situation but you can't be precious about your income when you are claiming state or local authority help

They are looking at income. Not outgoings.

You can click on online banking, to just show 'money coming in' & send that.

They want to see that you have not got 3 different jobs, earning £10,000 a month & saying you only earn £100 a month.
