Credit rating help!

Hello,

I'm new to mumsnet and was just hoping for some info about how to raise credit score. I don't know whether I am being particularly stupid, but I don't fully understand whether it is the case that I need to have credit cards etc to help do this?
My credit rating is good but I would like it to be better. The negative I have says raise credit limit but I don't know how to! I have a credit card with max limit of £500 - do I need to see if I can get another card with a higher limit? Is that what helps!?
I'm not as clueless about most things in life but this really confuses me as I was always taught credit cards = bad!
Thanks!

If you use your credit card regularly and pay it back in full that will help and your credit card provider may offer you a higher limit. Otherwise just give them a call and ask them to increase it - they generally don’t do a credit check for this whereas a new card would need one which can drive your score down temporarily.

Having a high limit won’t improve your score by itself, though - you need to use a bit of credit but keep it to a low percentage.

Martin Lewis’ MSE site is good to help improve your score - join the credit club and it’ll tell you more about what to do.

Ignore your score. It’s meaningless - potential lenders don’t even see it. It’s your credit history that lenders see.

Focus on using “good” credit (no pay day loans) when you can and making sure you pay off at least the minimum payment each month, if not, in full.

A credit card and a phone contract can help you become more appealing to lenders if you can show you have a history of using them responsibly and not missing any payments, or making them late.

Also make sure you’re on the electoral register and aren’t linked to anyone with a bad credit history.

Get a copy of your credit report and check for any nasties such as CCJs, or late / missed payments.

My credit rating is good but I would like it to be better. Why would you like to make it better? Given you say your rating is already good, why do anything different to what you currently are doing... which I assume is using the credit card occasionally and then paying it off in full.
