Failed landlord reference help!!!

I am currently 19 weeks pregnant and me and other SO privately rent a 2 bedroom flat. We love this flat and have ALWAYS paid our rent on time. The landlord has told us he is looking to sell the property so me and my SO found a new place and have paid money to hold this place for us and have been waiting over 1 week for our landlord reference to come back. The letting agent has just told us we failed and it now is being referred for a final decision. The reason we failed is because this month we are 3 days late paying the rent, but with the landlord selling up and us having to rush to find a new place in 2 weeks all our money has gone on the deposit for the new place. Also, we have been without a working cooker for nearly 2 months now, even when we told them I was pregnant and I need to be able to eat proper food they didn't seem interested (now we know it's because the landlord is selling) so we have had to fork out for takeaways, meals out and relying on going to our parents for food, so in essence we have been paying for a service we haven't even got. I'm really trying not to stress as it's not good for the baby and I'm hoping the final decision comes back positive as we literally have nowhere to go if not! Has anyone else ever been in the same boat??

That is crap but if your LL was asked If you had always paid your rent on time what was he supposed to say?

Try to go into council housing. I appreciate you had no working cooker for 2 months but you didn't have to buy expensive takeaways and meals out. That money would have been better spent on a mini oven that you could have taken with you when you left!

There are certain essentials you have to pay, and your rent on time is one of those. I’d take this as a lesson learned for next time.

OP you can't just not pay your rent on time because you've had an expensive month and are paying a deposit on the new place - you needed to deal with the broken cooker beforehand, with an agreement (reduction in rent), or warn them you were going to be late.. anything, something other than just not pay it.

good luck getting it sorted out, you can always offer an explanation, but i wouldn't frame it from the POV you have just done to your next landlord (it makes it sound like you don't know how to pro-actively deal with the problem and are just expecting to pay the rent late with your rationale, sorry if that's not the case, but just telling you how it might look to a new landlord who doesn't know you).
