Best bank account for 11 year old?

My son's just turned 11 (year 6) and I'm considering getting him a bank account for his pocket money. He only gets £2 a week atm, but because he tends to save it up he doesn't have room in his money box any more! Also, I thought if he had a debit card I could keep it in my wallet for now and he wouldn't have to remember to take cash out with him if we're out shopping. Has anyone got any advice about whether it is or isn't a good idea, or can recommend a good account? Don't know if I should think about a savings account instead.

You wouldn't get a card with a savings account. Most of the high street banks will offer a current account with debit card for children age 11+. My two have current accounts with Santander and savings with bank of Scotland

Here, children until 12 years old cannot have a debit card. Also, savings accounts won't have debit cards attached, so it would depend whether you want an everyday account or an interest-earning account.

I am not in the UK, so this may not apply, but I would be surprised if it was vastly different.

Nationwide FlexOne account is for ages 11-18 and has a contactless debit card. My DCs opened theirs at 11 and really like the freedom to tap and pay.

It is from age 11 in the UK. Ds is 11 and his is with Santander.

Thanks all. Just been into TSB and they do 2.5% on a current account, so I might go for that.
