Hi , Hope someone can help , my husband has been diagnosed with sight loss and can no longer drive ; he was bus driver. We have never been late or missed a mortgage payment , but without his wage we cant afford our mortgage , Has anyone ever had a break from their mortgage just to give us a bit of time to adjust and my husband to find a new job .I work but my husband was the main breadwinner, i will be asking for more hours at work but it still wont be enough to make up the shortfall. Thanks in advance for your help.

I’m not sure about a mortgage holiday, could be a thing but I’ve never heard of it. Definitely phone the mortgage company as soon as and let them know the situation. Your husband may now be entitled to benefits for his disability so might be worth checking that out. I’m pretty sure that if you’re disabled and you have a mortgage the Government will cover the interest and you only pay the repayment part especially if you’re unable to work (that could be wrong but worth checking it out)

I haven’t done it myself, but I used to work for a lender who offered mortgage payment holidays. Every lender will have their own criteria, so I would contact yours to see if you qualify.

Even if a payment holiday isn’t an option, make the lender aware of the situation and ask if there’s any other help they can offer you. It’s important to keep taking to them.

So sorry to hear about your DH. We have taken a payment break until the end of the year for various reasons, but we had overpaid previously. If you have your mortgage offer still check the terms. Hope all goes well.

Regarding the government paying the interest on your mortgage, support for mortgage interest is now paid as a loan rather than a benefit.

I'm so sorry for this awful news. I would definitely contact them. A colleague was able to take a mortgage break in much less serious circumstances. I do think it depends on the provider and your original agreement though. Speaking to them would certainly keep them in the loop though.

ThanksThanksThanks

We had to do this recently and took 2 month break. You can take up to three months every two years with my provider. They then add the missing payments to the rest of your term. So mine went up by £15 or so a month I think.

Sorry you are in this situation. I hope you have some support. Has your husband been advised on benefits he can apply for? ESA will be means tested. And will asses you as joint claim. Unless you are in a uc area. Pip is not means tested. But do get some help with the forms.

Most lenders will offer some payment holiday options but might only be for 3 months.
Can you look at extending the term of the mortgage so that the monthly payments reduce?
