Paying back tax credit overpayment

Hi
Does anyone know how I am meant to pay money back? Letter just said we will ask you to pay this back please contact us if you can't, but no bank details or anything for making the payment.
I really don't want to call them so hoping someone here has had similar??

They'll deduct it automatically from other benefits in my experience.
They took nearly £100 in one go from my UC claim and left.me knackered.
Call them, don't leave them to sort it.

I don't have anything for them to deduct it from that's why I need to make a lump sum payment. It relates to apr/may 2017 so I've known they would ask for it but they wouldn't let me pay it til this year's renewal was done.
Just worried with their general incompetence that if I make the payment without the official process it might get lost forever.....

Ime letting it go to their collection dept is better. They accepted £15 a month for £1500 debt.
Won't affect credit as its their own dept.

I need to know this too. I had an overpayment last April. I also don’t have any other benefits they can take it from

They either take it from your award e.g reduce your future payments. I was unlucky in the fact I'm not entitled to anything anymore and now payback £44 dd per month have done for about 3 years. I've still got 18 months to go 😶

Call the helpline.
Seriously can't stress that enough.

Doesn't matter if you don't get benefits any more, or if you do, if you're working or not etc.
It's your responsibility to repay this debt. If you don't they will come after you and costs will.likely go up.

An annoying phone call is better than them chasing you.

I received the same. Called them and was told another letter with payment details would be sent out in a few weeks. I’m still waiting but will call them again in 2weeks, I think.

Seriously? You NEED to speak to them. Every case and situation is different. 100 Mumsnetters can tell you what happened to them and I can guarantee all stories will not be the same. It's personal circumstances that dictate what happens next.

What the reluctance to speak to them?

I called them and paid it back in a lump sum over the phone using my debit card although I think you can pay it back monthly if you cannot afford to do it in one go.

I did phone the helpline and they said there would be a letter in the post. Nothing so far

They give you a receipt number over the phone and can email you a receipt whilst you are on the phone if you want.

Im another one where they messed up and i was left with an overpayment, i rang three times to check. They wacked me with an overpayment of £5000. I rang them (it was horrid, they made me cry and threatened to take away my self employed DH's tools). But eventually we did the budget (include everything OP, MOT, servicing, car tax, pet insurance, house insurance as well as the obvious food etc) I think it was down to £40 a month. At first they reduced what i would be getting (so say i was due £100 they would pay me £60), then it went down to me paying nothing and them giving me nothing as it was a nil balance and then it was me paying them £40 a month.
The annoying thing was my income hadn't changed at all in that time. So not only had I lost this money but i then had to find money to give them. DH is self employed and it just couldn't cope as they take the profit he made (even though thats not what comes home).

Good luck op, get your spreadsheet done and get it over and done with. It is shit i know flowers

It is shit, get your budgetdown, ring them tell them you can’t pay and they will come up with a repayment schedule.
I had to go through a few different departments as my repayment is so low (hence needing tax credits!). But we got it sorted in the end.

So I phoned them having re-read the website to get terminology correct and after 20 mins on hold they said they can't tell me if the letter has been issued yet but it's normally 2 weeks not 30 days. Pointed out that it was already more than 30 days since renewal date and her answer was I don't know then, if you are due a letter then I'm sure it will come soon. (Waste of time and underlining the reason I didn't want to ring in the first place)

Am fortunate, I knew I would have an overpayment & have put the money aside so I don't have to negotiate payment plan etc but after a horrendous experience in the past (which debt collectors sorted in days after I'd tried to do the same for 18 months) I don't want to just phone up & pay/pay online without all of the correct paperwork because I don't trust the robustness & connectivity of their systems.
I guess I'll just wait.....
