To be better of on UC than CTC?

So currently I'm out of work as have the kids and childcare is extortionate and dp works full time. We get 55 per week in child tax. ( could get housing help but it's too stressful so we don't as would be about £8,weekly..), Just done the online calculations and it says under the UC we would get £70 a week extra.?
And says we'd be better off? Surely that can't be right.. I'm scared to change until I was forced to but thinking maybe to apply?
Dp is paid PCM so only ever one assessment pay each month as that was my worry when he was in weekly pay.

If I apply online. Do I notify tax credits or do they naturally stop. We can just about afford to wait the 6 weeks for the application to be processed if needed.
I hear so many horrible storm scared tbh

Don’t touch UC with a barge pole unless you’re forced to.

Some people are better off on UC however I wouldn't entirely trust the calculator ! It's a five week wait for the first UC payment and tax credits would stop straight away. You need to be careful depending on the age of your children as you may be asked to look for work although it does depend what your dp earns.

You would have no work commitments with a six month old.

Read about the work committee requirements at each age of the children.

I think this is a foolish move, a very small group may be better off on universal credit but the rules and payment periods are arbitrary.

Please get it checked independently before you make the changes.

Do taxx credits no longer operate a 1 month run on?

Babyroobs · 09/09/2018 16:43

No tax credits would stop straight away as soon as a UC claim is made. There are still some occasions when a run of working tax credits can happen.

What help said.

There are a lot of problems with Uc at the moment - earnings being reported from employers late and this affects payments. It's also not great for people who get paid weekly or 4 weekly as there are some assessment periods where people have 2 pay days fall and then they get no UC payment, it's not great for the self employed either. Everyone will be on it eventually but I think unless you have had a proper calculation done and you are certain you are going to be better off, then it is best to avoid it until you are forced to go onto it.

Brilliant thank you. Will hold out until we have to.

If you rent, your rent will be added to your UC claim so, you're more likely to be better off on UC.
The only worry will be the 5 week wait and you've said that won't be a problem.
Your husband earns 26k - you won't be required to look for work. You'll be in the light-touch group.

A lot of people are scared of UC but remember that's people's individual circumstances. You're more likely to hear the bad news stories so look at your individual circumstances before you scare yourself of your £.

Good luck.
