Car Park Operators - do I bring them in?

I would appreciate some feedback please. I am a small business owner and have 8 allotted car park spaces close to a busy high street. I'm round the corner to a train station and there is a local hall / venue which holds day time events.

Invariably some of my spaces are taken by non customers which is fine if they are only there for a short period and I still have empty spaces for customers. However, recently and more frequently all 8 spaces are taken up even when there is nobody inside my shop. Other times cars park in my spaces all day and there is nothing I can do. I've even had cars parked for a week at a time!

I have had so many comments from my loyal customers who tell me that they would come in more frequently but they can never find a space to park in.

I've been approached by a car park operator (I'm not going to mention their name but they are one of the larger ones). They have offered to put up cameras whereby anybody who parks and then walks off without coming into my shop will receive a ticket as they will have video evidence to show this. They assure me that real customers will not receive a ticket. No receipts will be required as their cameras will track them coming into my shop.

Assuming their cameras work properly I am leaning towards taking them up on their offer as us retailers are struggling enough with online competition.

I know car park operators are unpopular but my business needs help. Should I allow them to put up their cameras and film people using my car park spaces? What other options do I have?

Sounds like a sensible idea.
Will the tickets be left on the car or posted? My concern would be if left on the car the drivers would argue with you in your shop.

The tickets would be posted.

I'd def do it, do they pay/charge you for each ticket ?

moreismore · 05/09/2018 10:19

Just make sure you are able to intervene and cancel tickets in case they ever make a mistake. E.g. a genuine customer parks but nips somewhere else before coming into your shop. Also you’ll obviously need very clear signage.

@notapizzaeater - haven't discussed any sort of commission but really I am just wanting my car park spaces back

@moreismore - agree. The new system supposedly tracks the movement from and to the car so even if somebody pops to the high street they will still be deemed a customer once they leave my shop and go to their car

How enforceable would these tickets be?
I thought only police and councils could give enforceable fines, all other tickets are merely invoices requesting payment.
I could be talking bollocks though, I often am!

Do you have signs up at the moment telling people the spaces are for your business customers only?

I think i would employ this parking company.

RebootYourEngine · 05/09/2018 10:42

Breakfast it changed a little while ago and now parking companies can and do take people to court over this. The advice before used to be to ignore them but not anymore.

dracolovesharry · 05/09/2018 14:38

I'd definitely do this as long as you can be sure it works and any mistakes can be overridden by you.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've avoided my favourite shop because I couldn't park.

serbska · 07/09/2018 10:44

100% do this

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/09/2018 10:46

as long as you definitely have the power to overrule any ticket given in error to a legitimate customer, go for it

CatchingACold · 07/09/2018 15:33

I would think that a sign saying that you are enforcing parking and will issue fines would have the same effect?

Why not try that 1st?
