Can you all tell me how much you pay for your gas and electricity please - I need to know whether I'm totally out of touch with prices or what?

I moved out of a 3 bed bungalow in March. Since last July I was with Powergen and they'd estimated that I should pay £50 per month (to cover gas & elec) which I'd been paying by direct debit.

I've just had the final bill and they reckon I still owe over £700 . I checked the meter reading and it's correct. Powergen say they'd just underestimated my bills.

I used gas for cooking and central heating and my husband is such a tight-arse that we don't over-do it on the heating anyway.

It roughly works out at £137 per month is this normal?

powergen powergen powergen

I didnt even have to click on the thread

weepootleflump · 06/06/2007 20:28

speedymama + jellyjelly, that sounds more like what I've paid in the past in other houses- none of which had good insulation or new heating systems either.

Fio, 2.3k ! What period was that over?

Haven't had a bill in my new house yet but I believe EDF are the suppliers - never heard of them before. A guy from NPower came round and told us we must switch to them immediately as EDF are extortionate [hmmm].

We pay £105 a month for gas and electricity. This has just been reduced slightly as we were paying too much. That is for a 3 storey 3 bed end townhouse.

ViciousSquirrelSpotter · 06/06/2007 20:36

Yes it is normal

I pay £180 a month (3 bed house).

This is because they wildly underestimated last year (£40) so I expect it to settle at around £80 - £100.

Rachmumoftwo · 06/06/2007 20:36

I don't know if it helps but I recently had a big bill from Powergen and managed to haggle them down quite a bit by saying they were forcing me into debt through no fault of my own. They hadn't sent me a bill for over a year. Apparently that is an acceptable amount of time for them not to bill us- wouldn't be if we just avoided paying for a year though!

Nightynight · 06/06/2007 21:04

You should be able to negotiate to take the same amount of time to pay them as you did to run up the bill (that used to be the case, anyway).

FrayedKnot · 06/06/2007 21:43

I am at how much you are all paying, we started with £80/month when we moved in nearly 2 years ago and after a year had amassed a massive credit so currently paying £30 a month until we have used up the credit, and then I think it will settle at aorund £40/£50.

We have a 4 bed house (double glazed), I use the tumble drier loads, dishwasher, at least 1 washing machine load a day, heating is on all day in the winter controlled via the thermostat.

House is not new.

ViciousSquirrelSpotter · 06/06/2007 22:49

OK Frayedknot, who is your supplier?

I am moving over

speedymama · 07/06/2007 10:19

Fio Fio, it is not a new house. It was built in the 1960s. However, it is a thermal trap. In the height of summer, we have to sleep on the ground floor sometimes because the second floor is unbearable, even with all the windows wide open.

Looking at what everybody else is paying, I realise that we are quite lucky

lunavix · 07/06/2007 10:46

At our old house (3 bed end terrace, broken radiators - some didn't work and others were stuck on full-on, and no insulation) we were paying £30 a month electric, and anywhere between £20 and £80 a month gas. The electric was with british gas, and the gas was on a pre-payment meter.

The year before, we were paying loads more for electric with npower I think, we'd get a bill for a month (any month, not summer vs winter) for £11, the next month would be £117. Gas was £10 - £40 a month.

We've just moved. First month electric was £14, first month gas was £50. (powergen I think). We're swapping to British gas though.

reported. Silly person paying higher prices and then trying to get it back by recruiting others.

one step from an MLM...

Look on comparison websites like www.ukpower.co.uk or money saving expert. You will need the kW per day usage from your existing bill. Some companies charge an exit fee. I send regular meter readings to my supplier so I keep tabs on usage and costs. Your bill sounds very high. I would also check how well your house is insulated, by all methods. If you are able get a smart meter.
