XBOX 360 - 18 months old. Broken. Should I have to pay to fix it?

Title says it all. Microsoft say I have to pay to fix it as over 12 months old. Is this right? Surely 18 months isnt long enough for an expensive piece of hardware to then fail and for the consumer to be liable for repair.

DH is very cross. Can someone advise me?

Hmm well it should be useable for a reasonable amount of time but it's hard to define what that period is - phone trading standards at your local council for advice.

GlassSlipper · 05/06/2007 17:43

ok, thanks. Thing is, we looked on the web and apparently it is a recognised fault with some of the first released consoles.

it's annoying, but 18 months is out of guarantee.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/06/2007 19:49

Hmm, well will they pay for half the repair in that case?

GlassSlipper · 05/06/2007 21:05

Not sure. DH has a contact in microsoft so he'll see what they can do. In the meantime I might contact trading standards as it seems to be a widely acknowledged fault but they say we have to pay as it is over 12 months

Right, just spoken to my brother.

Is it a launch machine ??? If so, microsoft extended all the 12mths garuntees for another 12mths as a good will gesture. This may also apply to non launch machines but you'd have to ask and see.
Basically he said Microsoft aren't always very forth coming about the extension and might fob you off, so say that you know people who have had their garuntee extended and their machine fixed for free.

He said, before you ring them, make sure you have tried unconnecting everything and trying it again and also if there is a hardrive attatched, remove it and try with out it, because thats what they will ask you to do anyway.

The website is www.xbox.com and the customer service number is 0800 587 1102.

If they agree to repair or replace then they will tell you that they are going to send you a label for you to stick on the box and then UPS will collect. This is crap, they do not send the labels out, and then UPS turn up on your door step the next day to collect the machine. When they do, tell them you haven't recieved the label and I think he said they take it anyway.

It needs to be boxed up well but not in the original xbox box.

Hope that makes some sort of sense and if you need to know anymore, give us a shout and i'll ask my brother again.

GlassSlipper · 06/06/2007 11:09

Thanks Nutty. Will tell DH. When did your brother get his fixed?

No problem. My brothers was fixed about 3 mths ago, and is due to be fixed again asap.

This has happened to lots of xbox consoles and most people just pay for a new one or get it fixed at their own cost. I would try and get them to pay though as 18 months isn't long and it should still work after that.
