Child tax credits and overtime

My husband has just left me out of the blue for another woman. He was the higher earner in our marriage and I currently work 20 hours per week term time and earn £16k gross. Obviously one of the many panics I am going through right now is whether I am going to cope financially.

I think I can claim child tax credits after using the online calculator, although our area goes over to universal credit on the 12th Sept so I am having to move fast and don't think I will get them for long.

Before all this happened my employer had offered me the opportunity to work flexibly on a specific project short term. I would need to claim additional hours worked on a monthly basis and there is provision for me to work an average of 5 hours extra per week between now and December. Professionally, it's a good idea for me as the project is above my working grade and a chance to prove myself.

Will working extra hours like this affect my claim and is it likely to cause problems for me? I am trying to get my head around all the guidance online but there is so much else going on at the moment that I am not doing well.

Is anyone has any experience or understanding of the system they would be willing to share I would be so grateful.

Tax credits are usually based on your previous year's income. AFAIK you only need to inform them of any changes if your income increases or decreases by 2.5k or more during the year. If you earn more this year than last year your tax credits will just be reduced the following year. None of this is the case with UC though.
