Best to trim down the list of what you need to get rid of the unnecessary tat, and buy good quality for the essentials. If you buy the cheapest available you will "get what you pay for" and end up paying twice.

Boot fairs!

By far the most common thing I see at our local boot fair is people who have obviously had a big clear out of baby stuff when their child is around 1.

Second hand - Facebook selling sites are good for bundles of clothes. Asking prices vary hugely so look around and check photos carefully.

BossWitch · 07/08/2018 08:00

Second hand - everything except mattresses is FINE to get this way. Ebay, fb selling pages, nct sales etc.

Asda George is good for cheap clothes - baby will grow out of clothes so fast there's no need to worry about them lasting. I also found their nappies very good.

If ypu plan on having more than one child, don't buy gendered clothing/ stuff! Why put yourself in the position on having to buy it all again in a few years because baby2 is a different sex?!

Nct nearly new sales are great too!

I borrowed most things from friends and relatives who already had babies, they were glad to get it out of their house. Look into cloth nappies. Consider breastfeeding. Facebook/eBay big bags for £10.

Second all the above plus you won't need as much as you think - promise!

So many baby markets on, Google. Once I glanced at a brand new moses basket for 10. I walked away and he was dramatically reducing the price, they had bad twins and two of everything and wanted to shift stuff and not take it home.

I got amazing pram, pushchairs off local free cycle sites, toys for pennies at car boots baby sales.. Face book.

An amazing Co sleeper cot from eBay, £50.

Lots of clothes at car boots, lovely makes.. For pennies and charity shops.

Things are not quite as dire as they were so I like to put back into the the system now, donating nice clothes to charity shops etc.

It’s the big things that cost the most:

  • cot (get second hand or from ikea)
  • pram (eBay / gumtree).

You’ll need to buy a new cot mattress and car seat so save money for those.

Babies don’t need much. Don’t get swayed into thinking you need a Ewan the dream sheep. You don’t. Trust me. White noise is available free on apps or YouTube!

Baby clothes are really cheap from supermarkets.

Ask friends for hand me downs though - hopefully you’ll know someone who has finished having kids now but if not don’t worry.

Fara kids charity shops if you’re in London are great also.

Aldi nappies and wipes are super cheap and good quality.

Primark clothes are lovely and really good prices. Absolutely nothing wrong with supermarket clothes. There's some gorgeous stuff available.

Breastfeeding is free if you want to do it! Found this a huge bonus for us!

Second hand cot, travel system, etc.

I would go brand new for your car seat and cot mattress.

Don't get sucked into buying expensive 'Nursery sets' from Mothercare that cost £££. IKEA do perfectly nice wardrobes, drawers and cots for very reasonable prices. You don't need a change table or specific baby furniture or rocking chair. Just anything you can afford/have is fine!

I bought all my big buys on sale. Saves £100s! It seems expensive now but once you've got the big bits - travel system, cot - you really don't need to spend much! Plus you'll get £80 child benefit every 4 weeks. I put this aside for clothes, nappies, wipes, and activities if there's anything left. It goes surprisingly far!

Facebook marketplace, gumtree and eBay. Baby stuff sells for very low prices secondhand and is usually in excellent condition. A new mattress is a good idea and make sure you know the history of any car seat you buy (I wouldn’t get one from a stranger) but other than that everything can be bought secondhand. Aldi is the cheapest place for nappies, wipes and formula.

Look up your local NCT and see when they are having their next second hand sale, brilliant bargains to be had. There will be loads of cheap and nearly new or actually new small baby clothes, they grow so fast people overbuy or get gifts they don’t use, cheap equipment, toys etc.

Get the bare minimum and buy things as you need - don’t buy a pram until baby arrives and then buy one based on what you decide will suit you, get a second hand Moses basket and new mattress first then a cot later.

Ikea baby and kids stuff is great, particularly their muslins.

Babies really don’t need much. I pack of baby grows. One pack of vests. That’s enough to start with.

Also if people give you gifts of clothing, exchange them for bigger sizes (it’s typical to end up with lots of newborn or 0-3 but they grow so fast you’ll be glad of having the bigger ones).
