Who has one?

Just got mine.

What are is your average spend per hour?

Mine is currently 2p per hour for electricity and 1p per hour for gas. 3 bedroom terrace house.

Just wondering how efficient we are being, and where we could save.

So you are less tha £1 a day average. So only £366 per year has and eclectic ?

Cuttingthegrass · 31/07/2018 11:41

Oh just thought it’s summer doh me

OnNaturesCourse · 31/07/2018 11:46

Yeah. That's only the average for today, running things as normal during summer months.

Just wonder if that's good or not.

We have a old boiler and heating system (including our water heater which is on 24/7)

You shouldn't keep the water heater on all day. Mine is on a for an hour or so twice a day.

OnNaturesCourse · 31/07/2018 11:52

We can't turn ours off. Switch is in the loft.

Do you not have a timer for the heating/hot water?

OnNaturesCourse · 31/07/2018 11:54

Nope. Just for the heating.

Just remember your standing charge is included in your daily total

Izzyw1983 · 31/07/2018 12:02

I used to work for British gas...as long as your boiler is serviced regularly then it doesn't matter if it's not new....

Heratnumber7 · 31/07/2018 12:18

Why don't you get the switch moved, or an override switch fitted somewhere more accessible. Heating water 24/7 must be costing you and the planet a fortune.

Blerg · 31/07/2018 12:24

Your rates sound similar to us. I have noticed how anything generating heat is expensive like kettle, drying cycle of dishwasher. I’ve always tried to only boil water needed, etc but it helps focus the mind.

Using the oven is way more expensive than the hob I have noticed.

OnNaturesCourse · 31/07/2018 12:25

We can't get it moved, rented property...

I know the standing charge is over and above the amounts used, but thank you.

The boiler was just recently serviced. It's actually a old hot air system that runs so it's older than I am 😂

I have one, three bed, three storey house. Use about £1.50 a day at the moment and it was around £2.50 a day in the winter. I've been paying £60 a month on electric and £50 on gas on dd and I'm about to get £270 back in overpayments! I am really happy with having one, I like to watch the spends in real time Grin

OnNaturesCourse · 31/07/2018 13:58

Thanks for the info.

I've been paying 69 and 49 for both over the winter and have just kept our direct debit at those amounts so it will be interesting to see our usage over summer. I'd rather over pay than under pay. Hope you enjoy your money!

Running round the house putting things on to compare 😂 it would seem my oven, washing machine and my bottle prep machine are electricity eaters. I haven't had the courage to try the tumble dryer yet.

Wonder how long it will be before I get bored of this and just hide it away somewhere.

You're not allowed to unplug the smart meter otherwise they can't take readinhs!

I love ours, 2 bedroom terraced house, 2 adults and baby and we spend £50 a month so £600 for both gas and electric max. Sometimes we get some money back if winter hasn't been too cold

specialsubject · 02/08/2018 11:42

things that generate heat are the biggest users.

the smart meter will make no difference to use, of course, and hence no saving. Send monthly meter readings. When did you last shop around for a fix? You won't reduce your bill but fixes mean it will go up more slowly.

with that awful water heating system, run the hot water only in 'chunks' to minimise the reheating. Is the tank insulated?

what is the EPC on this place?

QuinionsRainbow · 02/08/2018 12:56

"You're not allowed to unplug the smart meter otherwise they can't take readinhs! "

The little display device insid your house is NOT the smart meter. It just gets fed some of the data that your smart meter(s) out in the meter boxes or under the stairs are sending back to your supplier. We only use ours (now redundant as we switched recently) to read the meters once a month - more convenient than going outside!

OnNaturesCourse · 02/08/2018 22:53

EPC is a C... God only knows how.

Air vent heating and a hot water system that know one knows how to turn off unless it's turning the boiler off.

Interestingly our boiler has two pilot lights, one for heating, one for the hot water.
