Anyone know anything about Income Support

Baby due in 3 weeks and have just started maternity leave. Am having about 10 months off then DH and I are both hoping to work part time. I've checked out the government website on the matter, but quite frankly find it a bit useless. From what I understand if DH works 16 hours or less (e.g. 2 days) and I work 24 hours or less (3 days) we can claim income support, does that sound about right?

Can anyone tell me how much income support is? I expect it is means tested, but can anyone give me any ideas?

Is it also the case that we can claim housing and council tax benefit too?

Any advice greatly appreicated.

www.entitledto.co.uk I think you would be earning way too much for income support, but if you have a low income you may get more in child tax credit/working tax credit.

No, that's not correct. Because your application for income support is based on your earning as a family - including your DH.

So if BOTH of you are working less than 16 hours, you may qualify for it.

YES, of course IS is means-tested, otherwise lots of people who didn't want to work at all would claim it.

Anyone can apply for housing and council tax benefit, but again, it is means tested and you would apply jointly.

IS is not meant as a top up to work. That's what tax credits are for.
