Selling a car privately - what do I need to do

A friend has expressed an interest in buying my little car. I'm sure there are Forms To Be Filled Out in order to make the sale official. Other than the part where he hands me a cheque....what paperwork/legal stuff do I need to do to transfer ownership? And, from where might I obtain these forms?

Thank you.

You (and he) sign and fill in the slip on the log book which you already have. There is nothing else.
It tells you which bits to fill in on the form.

You should have a V5 registration document with all your car details on. It tells you how and what to fill in. Maybe worth having a duplicate recipt for both of you as well with the money received, car details and both names and addresses.

Wow - thanks for the fast answers. Once I've filled in the log book and completed the reg document, presumably I have to send a copy of it to somewhere official? I'll check on forms because it must say there...

There is a part on the log book which you as the owner have to complete and send to the DVLA. Do do this. Don't rely on the purchaser to do it (which is what used to happen) as, if they fail to do it, either deliberately or by omission), you get landed with any problems arising later, such as speeding tickets, etc.

Thanks to all for your good advice.
