Tax Credit Advice

Just after a bit of advice really. We've not renewed our Tax Credits yet and I'm iffing and arring if to do so or not.

We get £13 a week. Letters come out with completely the wrong figures on, wrong start dates for jobs etc (we have seasonal jobs alongside our full time jobs) I have called numerous times to advise of the correct figures and dates and had letters 'confirming' the information I had given AGAIN with completely the wrong figures/dates. Its like they pull them out of thin air.

Each year we have had an overpayment (even after providing the correct figures) and they've said they will reduce our tax credits to pay it back. I've tried asking if we can cancel our tax credits as its really not worth the hassle that comes with it. I've been told if we cancel we have to pay back the overpayments immediately and cannot arrange any sort of payment plan. They've said it'll be best to keep the claim running and they will take it out of the money we get weekly.

They wont give me a figure of how much we have been overpaid when I've asked over the phone and in writing (When I've chased a reply to letters I've sent they have said they have sent it to a house number we have NEVER lived in and cannot send a duplicate copy) Convenient...

What I'm asking is if anyone has had any experience of calling and cancelling the tax credits with an overpayment in place. Have they arranged a payment plan or wanted the money straight away. I have no idea what the figure is but for example its £500 (I bloody hope not) they cant expect someone to pull that out of their rears?

Thanks for any help smile

we got an overpayment of over £900 many years ago and I negotiated to pay it back at £25 a month. However I'm sure things have changed now and they are stricter. Also you will need to confirm your figures for last year at renewal or they will want the whole years tax credits back.

Thank you. I'm thinking I'll renew with correct figures then in a few weeks call to say I would like to cancel TC's. I'm hoping they wont expect us to pay any overpayment back in one go and will let us make a payment's monthly.

TC's in general have always been a pain in the arse and seem to pull figures from thin air.
