Tax credits/universal credit

I need some advice before I make any changes. So I was claiming tax credits as a couple for 5 children . My husband has left me so I going to have to cancel my claim, and claim single. So when I stop my tax credit joint claim, I will have to claim universal credit ( to be able to access the housing element and stuff) só what will happen to my tax credits? Will it stop straight way or will it continue till universal credit is sorted because I've heard universal credit takes 6 weeks to process and that means I'll have no income for 6 weeks as a single parent. How will i manage that. I don't work as Im a SAHM. I just need to see if you guys can advise me before I ring to cancel.

Don't cancel it's a change in circumstances instead and your claim won't stop

You can get an advance payment.

@Mrschainsawuk on but i will need to claim housing benefits and it has been scrapped in my area so I will have to claim universal credit which also replaces tax credits so I can't claim both ?

As soon as you make a claim for Universal credit then your tax credits stop immediately. You can get an advance from UC.

Hi I do not know how to start a new chat to ask a question my friend has just recently had a child well 3 months old now she has just told me that she does not get child tax credits or working tax credits her partner works 30 hours and she will be going back working 20 a week also. This would be under the 30 thousand a year cut off with tax credits Is this right she is not eligible for any as its all uc in her area and I have not been switched to that yet so I do not know but if she was able to claim it throught hmrc why is she not with uc as she only gets child benifit. And don't want them fobbing her off

Sorry about the name above I have changed it I'm not sure why it actually chose that did not realise u till I sent the post

As soon as you claim UC, your tax credits will stop straight away.

I had to get an advance payment to tie me over whilst I waited the 6 weeks to get my first payment.

They will ask you how much you need and how much you can afford to pay back over however long. I think you get 3 choices

MessySurfaces · 27/06/2018 20:12

taketwo as you have 5 kids I think you stay on tax credits, as UC can only cope with two children (I'm assuming they are old enough that you are eligible for TCs for all 5, or at least for 3!).

You could speak to citizens' advice to confirm before ringing tax credits?

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/06/2018 22:24

As messy says you cannot claim UC with five dc atm, so you will stay on tax credits. You will be able to claim hb it will exist in your area for certain claimants.

Apparently I will only get 0.50p a week housing benefits due to the cap so I will have to use the tax credits for rent
