I reclaimed my bank charges and got them back quite quickly without any hassle

My bank is Royal Bank of Scot and having followed the advice on Martin's Money Saving Expert website the whole process took about 7 weeks. I also added on the interest they had charged me every month not just the charges.
So I'd reccommend giving it a go if you bank with them, but think you need to hurry as i'm sure the banks are trying to get the law changed.

I keep thinking about doing it, but I'm worried I wont be able to set up another account elsewhere. We've an offset with the Woolwich, which could cause major problems. If they close our account, its new mortgage too. Anyone else done it with offset mortgage accounts?

I've just beenon the phone to Barclays thi morning, to see what is happening, and I should know either way byJune 22nd.

Wish me luck

A few weeks ago - buggered up my current account and went over overdraft limit with halifax - I rang them to sort it out as soon as realised - they were going to charge me £90 (3 x £30) for transactions that they processed. Said I thought that was insane as the amount were pittance and they dropped it to £30. Mentioned this to my sister who said £30 was still outrageous - so rang them again and asked them to put in writing how they came about £30 charge - a complete breakdown of their costs so I could see whether was a fair charge - she offered to refund it - no mentions of claims or stroppiness just polite request for info - also pointed out that had been with bank for 12 years and never been charged/naughty before.

Aaaaand Natwest have just agreed to give me ALL MY MONEY BACK! Wheee!
So anyone else still going through the procedure, take heart!

harleyd · 07/06/2007 14:25

had anybody tried this with the halifax? i sent letter by recorded delivery 8 weeks ago & no reply from them yet. have rang and been told they have a backlog. think its delay tactics

Lolly68 · 07/06/2007 14:50

madamez - well done! I live in hope. How much did you get if you dont mind me asking??

octo · 07/06/2007 19:23

never got that far harleyd - read my post - ringing them sorted it out - maybe worth giving them a bell.

madamez · 07/06/2007 22:08

Lolly68 - a lot! (over £4K) I have been a struggling freelance for several years, so there were lots of charges: I claimed for every bounced direct debit, cheque or standing order, and for every "referrall fee" where they paid such things when the money wasn't ctually there, but I didn't claim for interest, which may have helped. Also have been with same branch of same bank for nearly 30 years.

Lolly68 · 08/06/2007 16:16

Madamez - I'm claiming back £7K. I do hope I hear something soon although they did say 6-7 weeks.

chocolatekimmy · 08/06/2007 22:38

Nat West are a disgrace, I wrote to them in March and didn't get a response after 40 days so wrote again giving 14 days, still nothing. Phoned customer services 3 weeks ago to be told the statements would be ordered there and then and that someone would contact me in 2-3 days - still nothing.

Lloyds TSB aren't much better, again started in March, took ages to get statments then got 3 lots in 3 weeks. Told the charges don't qualify for some reason so sent them stage 2 letter - still nothing.

Goldfish, got the statements and everything in the time initially however no response to refund request!

Whole process is flawed and time consuming. I'm only after about £200 so far and its charges like £30 for going £11 overdrawn for a day

poptot · 08/06/2007 22:57

Just to give you all some hope I have been fighting with Abbey since Jan and they have just refunded me £4000 so don't give up, it's a long slog but worth it.

madamez · 09/06/2007 20:26

Lolly - I got my letter to say they would give me back the money on the last day they had to reply.( oh, and the money is not in my account yet but hey, I'm going to give them a few days to sort that out) It's 8 weeks, apparently, that they are legally allowed to keep you waiting. so add yours up and phone them the day after the 8 weeks are up.
Best of luck.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 13/06/2007 10:44

Barclays only just sent their statements this week - I wrote beg. of April. Am just typing up the schedule of charges now, too chicken to add interest - £1100 is windfall enough for me.
What's everyone planning to spend theirs on? Ours is from the joint account so we'll pay some off the credit card bill and the rest on a new draftfree, secure front door. Dull I know.

harleyd · 13/06/2007 10:46

i just got the list of charges bit in from halifax yesterday. does anybody have template letter for next stage. tia

TequilaMockinBird · 13/06/2007 10:47

harleyd, if you go to www.moneysavingexpert.com - all of the templates and letters are on there.

I just sent off letter and list of charges yesterday - totalling £2600! Keeping everything crossed...!

harleyd · 13/06/2007 10:49

thk tequila, mine totals £2200. planning the holiday already lol

pipsqueak · 13/06/2007 22:21

harleyd. how did you get throught ot hte halifax. i have been waiting 8+ weeks for my statements whcih ahve still not come but i cant get through to a person just an automated answering machine ..grr! i am intending to use the letters on the Which website as they are fairly straigtfroward .

Lolly68 · 14/06/2007 09:31

pipsqueak - I would go into a Halifax branch and ask for your statements personally. They have not got no excuses then to not go through with your request.

pipsqueak · 15/06/2007 00:25

good idea lolly..i'll give it a whirl
