bank accounts for students

DD is going to uni in September but needs to open a new bank account asap for student finance purposes. Any recommendations? A reasonable free overdraft facility would be good but good customer service also important - and she wouldn't mind the odd perk/incentive either! Smile. Speedy responses would be really welcome as she needs to get on with this...

Does she have a current account already? They can normally be converted to a student account

Santander's 123 Student Account is worth a look, as it also pays interest on some of the balance and gives access to a higher interest rate on their regular monthly saver account too.

As for 'perks', it comes with the option to apply for a free 4 yr Railcard.

She's got a Nationwide Flex account atm - not sure if that would do her just as well as a new account...Hmm Will check that out. Have heard bad reports about Santander's punitive fees for going over the overdraft limit (not that we assume that will happen...!) and their customer service.

This sounds like you desperately need her to open a new account - why?? If she needs to give SF some bank details, then use the Nationwide account initially.

There are plenty of student accounts around, all with different perks, but when DS opened his, he had to provide a UCAS pin which was only available when he had a confirmed place after results.

She maybe can get this earlier if she has an unconditional offer, but otherwise wont be able to open a dedicated student account without it.

My kids had Lloyds under 19s accounts when younger, then converted to Lloyds classic account at 18, for various reasons. It is a normal bank account. DS used this for SF loan in, plus earnings from his job, and accommodation costs out.

DS also opened a HSBC student account, running that for his general living costs at uni. He also got a HSBC credit card, which - if used sensibly - will help credit rating - but he is very sensible with money, which I appreciate doesn't apply to all students.

I would either go based on what banks have a branch on or near campus, or go for a combination of the best overdraft and best free stuff. The customer service on all banks is pretty shit in my experience. Just dont go with Nat West.

She is going to use her existing account for now and transfer to another Nationwide account later on, post-results and pre-uni. Though no freebies/incentives on offer, Nationwide rate highly for customer service and overdraft facility is good, so she's happy to go with that.

Is she getting it converted to a student account to take advantage of the fee free overdraft?
