Single claim tax

My brothers family is claiming child tax credit as single,he doesn't know about that long time because his wife changed this claim,so my brother want to change this claim and is worry that tax credit will be asking return all money that were claimed in fraudulent,who will need refund these money? Both or person who claim?

So your brothers partner is claiming tax credits as if she were single, is that correct?

If that's the case then yes, it's likely that much of it will need to be paid back. If its a single claim, then I believe it's the claimant that's responsible.

Yes if they are a couple and have been wrongly claiming then the excess will need to be paid back. If it was deliberately and fraudulently claimed then there could well be other consequences.

They started claim as a couple,but later wife changed to single claim,and my brother didn't know about that long time because she hits money 🤔 and spend them alone as well,so who will be responsible if they need paid money back? 🤔 Thanks everyone..

Brothers wife as the claim is in her name.
