How to claim back income tax that shouldn't have been taken?

My DS on a gap year worked for 5 months and had income tax taken from him to the amount of over £600. He's wondering how he can claim this back as he won't use up all of his tax free allowance as he's not working the whole year.

Must he wait until the end of the tax year and for it to come back automatically or is there a way to get it back before hand?

What did the tax office say when he called them?

Contact HMRC.

If it's part of this tax year I think he'd have to wait until the tax year is over as HMRC mightn't refund incase he has additional earnings which could attract Deductions. But if it was last year , prior to 5th April 2018 then he can send a copy of his P60 to HMRC and ask then to look into his deductions.
