Buying property away from main place of work?

For some reason I thought that this would be straightforward but it appears I may have been a bit foolish.

I work in city X and DH works in city Y (about 3 hours apart). We rent in city Y and I travel to city X to work for 3 days a week (I lodge)

I am the main earner and DH is likely to retire in 12 months. He is a lot older than me.

I expect to work until I reach retirement age (20 years).

For various reasons we want to buy a house in city Y (where DH works and where we currently rent - pay bills, council tax etc.. it's our main residence) - this is because this is where family are settled, he's receiving healthcare, he likes the area etc.. I love this area too but decided the commuting was worth for career and salary

My main question is - will I be able to get a mortgage (in my name only) for a property in city Y even though my main place of work is city X?

Thanks in advance.

You can live where you want. It doesn't matter where you work. I live in Scotland and know loads of people who work in London during the week. It never stopped them buying a house.

It depends entirely on your salary, price of house and if you can get to a legal agreement with your DH re ownership, but yes, you can have a mortgage and deeds in your sole name, it might get tricky if you are to separate/if he has children etc.

Thanks both that's reassuring
