If we own 2 cars (haven't sold the old one yet),
and I am insured for the new one fully comp
can I drive the old one and be covered third party with the one insurance.

Or do I have to have insurance for both cars??? I know I can drive other peoples cars third party but they will also be insured by the owners policy.

I only need to drive it for a week while new one is getting sorted, so I don't want to have to take out insurance again for the old one.

Think you can drive the other as third party but check you don't have ot notify your insurer of the reg details. If you want the car itself covered then you have to be on the insurance of that car.

whomovedmychocolate · 17/05/2007 21:27

Call the insurance company, they will normally issue you with a cover note for free. But I don't think you now get automatic third party.

pinkspottywellies · 17/05/2007 21:30

Some insurance companies will let you overlap so both cars are covered for a week. I've been offered this before.

Thanks I suppose I will have to phone them, they have one of those crappy call centres where they work with a scrit and god forbid you ask anything not on their list. They tried to get me to pay loads extra to chang cars before and continue the policy, it was cheaper to cancel the policy and take out a completly new one. Only reason I went with them again was they were a lot cheaper then the otheres.

Unless you have something like pinkspottywellies says, almost certainly NOT. The usual wording is that if you have fully comp insurance on your car you are insured third party on any other car THAT YOU DON'T OWN.

SlightlyMadStew · 17/05/2007 22:28

Never knew the 'THAT YOU DON'T OWN' bit DCMB - but then I have never needed to.

It is all in the wording. I think mine says that I am covred third party so long as I am "driving it witht eh owners permission"

DP and I drive each others cars (well he drives mine - he hasn't let me drive his new one yet) - But we are legally 2 different owners as the logbooks have different names on. Also I think he is a named driver on my policy for my car so that he can drive it fully comp

DontCallMeBaby · 17/05/2007 22:44

Mm, it's a weird one, don't know why it's the case. Years ago I was the main insured person on a car that belonged to my dad - I was fully comp, my mum could drive it on her own car insurance, anyone else with fully comp (and my dad's permission!) could drive it. Just not my dad.

SlightlyMadStew · 17/05/2007 22:53

But I thought that it was illegal to hold the insurance policy on a car that you didn't actually own (on log book) in your name??? I think some companies are starting to offer policies that accomodate this but I know of at least 2 people who have had to register a car in anohter persons name so that they could be the insurance holder....

anyway this is a different issue to teh OP. I would ring insurer and clarify - stating that you do not want to purchase a second policy. You do not want the small print to catch.

SaintGeorge · 17/05/2007 22:56

It might be a moot point anyway. A lot of insurance companies have scrapped (or are in the process of scrapping) the 3rd party cover on other vehicles.

Darciesmum · 18/05/2007 10:09

HI, even if you do have driving other cars TPO it can't be used on a car you already own.

You can cover your old car Temp for upto 30days (at extra cost), but depends on your underwriters terms & conditions

Darciesmum · 18/05/2007 10:11

Also the Driving other cars also means you can't drive a car your spouse owns,

DOC means you can drive any other car TPO providing you have permission with the owner, but can't be a car owned by you or your spouse.

Thanks for the input, DH phoned and got it transfered to the other car, cost us extra, but it looked like we wouldn't have been covered otherwise.
