Oh my glamorous, flibbertigibbert lifestyle....anyone know some good personal budgeting software?

It has come to this. No more partying the night away for Mr and Mrs Gizmo, gaily ordering the champagne and bejewelled elephants without a thought for the financial consequences.

No. We are both now facing the prospect of lunching with Mr Redundancy, and a little, ahem, prudence, is in order, at least until we find new jobs.

To make this easier I think I need to stop using the rather eccentric bespoke spreadsheet we have at home and invest in some Serious Tools. Can any of you experienced budgeters out there recommend something? It has to be able to track cashflow week to week, cope with the comings and goings from three different accounts and ideally be accessible from more than one computer.

I am aware that spending money on software to tell me how to budget may be truly (rather than Alanis Morrisette-stylee) ironic, but I just feel a slightly panicky need to take control, so who's up for an exciting conversation about personal finance software?

Rosie Millard?

or something like that anyway

yes, article was ok but then she 'survives' on £200 cash after bills

[bleeding heart]

Gizmo · 17/05/2007 15:44

Ah yes, Rosie 'I'm a professional f*cking useless female' Millard.

She annoys me just a leeeeetle, with her 'oh silly me, am I overdrawn again? I'll only be able to holiday in Tanzania this month then'

Methinks I may have issues with Millard-intolerance.

haven't read the whole thread (supposed to be going out!) but surely you don't want to spend money to budget! so.... log on to moneysavingexpert.com and get their FREE budget sheet downloaded (and I'm on a mac so it will work)
Trust me once you start reading that site you will turn into a penny pinching miser like me and have lots more in the bank!

Gizmo · 17/05/2007 15:55

But seriously folks...

The nice people (or slightly joyless pennypinchers, depending on who you run up against) at Motley Fool have recommended something called Liquid Ledger which is Mac compatible, has a budgeting facility and provides traditional user support that won't Bark and Sulk when you complain his spreadsheet is a big steaming pile.

All I need now is some prudence, frugality and self-control.

A new job with twice the salary would be nice, too.

Oooh, misc, I missed your comment - you are a genius and I can't think why I didn't think of MoneySavingExpert. I go....

I knew one day someone would spot my hidden genius! (very very hidden!)

WideWebWitch · 18/05/2007 11:37

I think you just need online banking and Excel really.

I found an excellent budgeting spreadsheet a while back, hang on, let me see if I can find it. I am lunching with Mr Redundancy too soon and fyi, his first name is fucking

willywonka · 18/05/2007 20:17

Dear Mr F Reduncancy,

Please will you stop lunching with my fellow MNers and their dp/dh's. It's an expensive business and really you're just a nasty piece of (non) work. Nobody likes you, so just f*ck off why don't you.

Ms P Dant

Blondilocks · 18/05/2007 20:27

I would use an Excel spreadsheet myself. If you're trying to save money then I would just make use of tools I already had rather than buying new ones.

At the moment I vaguely know what money's where & what's going out, but it's not that complicated at the moment so I don't use any method of tracking , more checking. & part of my job is dealing with budgets

I'm sure someone would be able to help with formulae next time it gets stuck...
