Mine got his child benefit and I would pay him for jobs on top of his chores.

Mine gets £6 week and phone 15£/month.

We buy necessities: basic toiletries, stationery, clothes but he earns £40 a week at Saturday job and more in holidays.

I had a part time job when I was 17 (in a leisure centre, 2 nights a week) and I carried on with it right through university until my final year (when I decided to quit to concentrate on final exams). My mum was a single parent (divorced) and couldn't give me anything. I had to earn my own.

I had enough to last me throughout university. No loans needed (mind you, it was free to go to uni then).

My son is 14 and I will definitely be pushing him to get a PT job when he is a little older.

DS18 has had a Saturday job for approx 18 months now but the hours vary from just 4 hours per day to occasionally a full day. He earns roughly £120 per month. We still give him £40 per month, pay his mobile and pay for his petrol to school. Once he has finished his A levels he will be looking for a job with more hours until he hopefully starts Uni and at that point we will stop paying him "pocket money".

I was rural and at sixth form doing 4 a levels. Worked all day Saturday and 5 hours on a Sunday. Tbf ny dad did drive me there and back on the Sunday because there were no buses.

I would say whatever you give him would be based on jobs he does around the house - that's on top of cleaning his own room, etc.

Wildlingofthewest · 13/05/2018 23:05

He needs to get a job!
I grew up in an extremely rural area
Always had a weekend/after school job from about 15 years old. Worked full time hours (45hrs per week) in school holidays,
Worked in hotels/pubs washing dishes, doing housekeeping, worked in local grocery shops.
Unless you live on the moon I’m sure he can find some work?!

Wow £40 a month for a phone and £20 for gym membership! Flip me do thats a lot.
I wouldnt give him extra to that. In fact i would want him to get a job and Id paid perhaps half what you currently give him.

Yes you live in a rural area but if he can get to a college and a gym I reckon he can get to a job as well.

I give mine £120 a month and pay for phone
They do help at home but it's not conditional
I don't want the working outside the house while still at school

My 17 y/o DD has had a job since 13 we leave rurally and she’s doing a levels. The school encourage them to have a job so many life skills.

Pock money wise I pay Mobile contract and that’s it. £18 per month.
