Tax credits

Hi

I'm just about to apply for tax credits and I'm a little confused.

I was on mat leave last year from April-September. My salary is 17.5k but I earned 12.5k due to to mat leave.

My salary this tax year will be higher as I won't be on mat leave, do I have to tell them this at this point?

Also my husband and is self employed and works part time employed too. How do I had his income? And how is it affected as his wage fluctuates weekly.

Thanks

You give them the final figure that you earned last year, it will be on your P60. Same for your husband.

If you know that this year's income will be different you can then call them after they have calculated it, and give an estimate for what this year will be. I have done exactly this in the past, and they altered my payments mid year so as not to create an overpayment, though I have read some posts on here where posters were told it couldn't be done, so perhaps it depends on the person you get on the phone.

There is a £2500 disregard in terms of increase and decrease in yearly income, so going forward, if your partners yearly income fluctuates more than that my advice is to keep on top of the estimates and be aware of your entitlement, so a large overpayment doesn't build up.

I use that to double check our entitlement so I can be sure we are receiving the correct amounts.
